howmuch to drive to warm up engine?

Hi Guys,
My e90 lci 325i doesn't have the oil temperature gauge but rather the useless mpg gauge, I normally do around 15 miles below 2.5k rpm before going flat out or having a spirited drive, is that enough? i can access the coolant temp from the hidden menu but read over here that its useless, any other tips before i feel like doing a flat out drive? inputs would be great.

Thanks.

Depends on the ambient temperature outside, probably about 20 mins in the winter.

well i m from asia, over here the outside temperature is mostly 25-30c right now so 15 miles taking it easy is enough to get everything in optimal temperature? i posted here cause i got the same Euro spec 325i(2.5 l) thats available in Uk.

Thanks.

hot oil

Is it not the case that if the oil gauge will give you a reading then it is warm enough to redline it.

One of the design criteria of modern engines is to get to operating temperature very quickly . .this is primarily for emissions . . as a warm engine has more complete combustion. I suspect the if you drive more than a few minutes at normal speeds you are warm enough as the metals used in modern engines are much more durable too.

ops just check the user manual & it says to get the reading from the electronic oil stick, the engine must be in operating temperature which is approx 6.5miles/10kms, so i guess when the oil reading works the car is in optimal temperature?

Thanks..
