More and more seems like the car to be seen in rather than a purer sporting experience than the sedan. Disappointing

However, the styling is for me more prissy rather aggressive and the weight gain unacceptable for a car that is already no lightweight.

If you are an enthusiast driver, what incentive is there to choose the more expensive coupe over the lighter 335i E90?

I think you have a valid point.

For me, however, I have wanted a BMW coupe since I was a kid driving around with my father in his orange 2002 back in the 1970s. It has been kind of a goal/dream of mine ever since.

That's the best reason of all. Enjoy

Wonderful.... I have always loved the 2002. This will be my first BMW with the 335i-E92, there is something passionate about the coupe.

Can't wait, hopefully all of those buyinf hte E92 will enjoy the purchase!

Hello. I'm the author of the article and I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys may have. The cars we drove were European-spec, as another poster has suggested.

Thanks,

One of the best organized, informative, and well written "initial impression" car articles I've read. And this is from a 25+ year subscriber to R&T, C&D, & Autoweek. Well done Reilly!

That said, I am looking forward to hardcore tests and direct comparison reviews.

This might be a dumb question, but is there any difference in terms of perfomance for eurospec, or does that mean that it has its fare share of differences with the USSpec based on DOT regulations.

The engine is tuned slightly differently, apparently courtesy of the CA emissions board. The euro version gets the oil cooler for the turbo. Otherwise same set of difs as between current Euro and NA versions of the E90 330 (side reflector requirements, airbox, etc.)

Thanks. No, it doesn't feel like a sports car. It is closer to a GT. I bet there are more than a few people on this list who think M3's should have inline six engines, and I bet most of those people will be very happy with a 335i. This isn't a match for the E46 M3, but this coupe is much easier to oversteer at low-to-medium speeds than anything I remember in a non-M3 E46 car.

Another interesting thing to mention is that I've seen a few reviews of the 335i with active steering mentioned, but in fact none of the cars offered in the initial press launch had active steering.

During your review, did you keep track of gas milage, and can you provide such data?

According to the specs, the E90 330i has the EU curb weight 1555 kg, the e92 330i 1545 kg, both 6MT.
I assume, the difference of 10 kg will be the same for the 335i.

Reilly,

When you turned off the traction control how did the 335i feel with no lsd?

And also how did it perform and launch with the traction control on.

How bad is this car going to be driving in the snow,,, well of course with all season or snow tires.

The car just kinda turns me off for not having a limited slip diff.

Also did you get your 0-60 time with traction control on or off,,, and how bad were you lighting up one rear tire doing so?

Thanks for your time.

I especially am curious to know what you think about this question.

I'm getting snow tires, but I'm debating just buying a winter clunker to get me through the real bad weather.

I'm counting on some Dunlop M3's and a judicious right foot to get me through Philly winters.

Thanks for your questions. You guys ask some good ones; does anyone want a job?

You can certainly feel that there's no GKN Mdiff wonderfulness in this car, although it's only under pretty sporty conditions, of course. The car is very good in med-to-high speed, and we mean good in the sense that it compares better than the outgoing e46 and just plain by itself. It's at the low-speed to med-speed second gear stuff, when you have all sorts of load and you're cranking through a corner that you'll realize the beauty of the Mdiff, and how much you wish you had it here. The inside wheel, without any load, will definitely spin. It won't ruin your driving experience, unless you plan on tracking this thing. If that's your goal I'd probably not recommend the 335i--the outgoing E46 M3 would be a better option if you don't want to wait for the next V-8 M3.

Launching with traction control is an exercise in finding out how quickly the system will retard your driving. We did find, interestingly, that even with traction off (all off), the car had the tendency to send a traction control response at the tail end of a drift. For instance, point the car into a second-gear hairpin, steer in, throttle down, and at the very tail end of the drift we'd get the slightest "save" from the system.

I can't speak to the car's winter weather traction. I drove it in mostly warm, dry conditions. We did, however, run into a storm which threw hail down on us. As we went through the wet pavement, the car was just as easy to drive with traction on or off, which was just as much a testament to the tires and the correct pressures we had in them. We were not surprised to find the car tending toward nose-heavy behavior in these wet conditions. Like all BMWs with 300 horsepower at the rear wheels, this one probably calls for winter tires in the winter and summer tires in the summer. If you're interested in the xi version of this, I'm just as anxious as you are to find out how it drives--we didn't get the opportunity to test it. While it hasn't been announced officially, it's our best guess that the 335i will be offered in an xi version, but it won't be later--most likely well into 2007.

The 0-60 times we provided were manufacturer numbers. We do not do instrumented testing, but if you're looking for that sort of data I'm sure you can find competing numbers at some of the buff books.

Thanks for the opportunity to respond.

Reilly

Reilly, thanks for your feedback, this is great.
What modifications would you recommend? Many of us on this list are interested in getting such things as an aftermarket LSD, additional strut brace, M-sport interior pieces (steering wheel, shorter shift knob), 19" wheels, and non-run flat tires. For the typical sporting driver that likes to drive fast, but is not likely to put the car on the track other than the occasional run around the 'ring, what do you see as the priorities (if any)?

According to the insiders on this board, the 335xi sedan starts production in 3/07 (MY07) while the 335xi coupe does not start production until 9/07 (MY08).
