Cobra iRadar? Other options?

Is anyone using iRadar? Any thoughts on it?

http://cobrairadar.com/

Seems like a good idea, like Waze. It also is a standalone detector if you're not connected to your phone. I'm looking for something inexpensive. Don't want to spend $300 on a detector. Would like to be around the $100 range

Well, you're certainly not gonna get a new detector of any quality/reliability for $100 (unless you manage to get a used one).

The quality detectors such as Pasport 9500iX, Redline, Max, or Valentine One go for $450-$500 not $300...

Cobra brand was never really considered a very good detector to begin with - IMO you should wait till you save up $$ to buy quality rather than spend $100 on a detector that will more than likely NOT warn you in time, & cost you more $$ in fines.

I would never feel confident in driving fast without getting busted, using a Cobra detector - and I've been using detectors for 37 years

The iRadar that you posted a link to is almost useless. You would have to just happen to be in an enforcement area, where there was also someone else ahead of you that had the iRadar to even get an alert...

The whole notion that some protection is better than none is a farce. What will happen is you'll have a false sense of security with your cheap piece of cobra crap, not be as attentive on the road, and by the time your cobra alerts you, all you'll be is informed that you'll be getting ticket.

Just think about it... you are considering buying a detector because you have a certain driving lifestyle you want to maintain without penalty. If you were to get a ticket, you will have to pay fees and insurance rates that will probably cost you somewhere at the 300 range at the bare minimum... If you get a piece of shit radar detector AND get pulled over, all you'll be doing is throwing away 100 bucks you could have spent on a reliable detector.

Trust me on this one, I've used cobra and it's not the way to go. Look at some old refurbished escort 8500 x50's... you can sometimes find them in the 200 range.

I was really lucky and found an updated Redline on ebay a few months back for 300 and the thing is amazing. The range i get with the thing is ridiculous.

There are tons of things to consider when purchasing a radar detector. Check out radardetectorforums.org if you are really interested.

^^What he said...

btw, you drive a $50,000 car and can't fork over more than $100 for an RD? Good luck in traffic court...

Good point guys. I guess I was just under the impression that radar detectors become outdated and obsolete fairly quickly because law enforcement are trying to come up with new ways to defeat them. Am I wrong? Does the technology never change?

I at least thought that with the social network concept that it would be updated pretty instantly or very recently. Like "hey there was a cop here 5 minutes ago"

When it comes to radar technology it has essentially remained the same. All good radar detectors detect X, K, Ka bands very well. X-band used to be used extensively years ago, now only a few states use X-band. K-band was used more maybe about 10 years ago but now Ka-band tends to fairly prominent... These are generalizations... if you check the link in the post above, there's a link to a map of what your area tends to use for radar enforcement.

Now with respect to laser guns/jammer technology, certain newer guns have been getting more punch thru against jammers but against most laser guns, the jammers work really well.

Hardwired V1.
V1 -> https://store.valentine1.com/store/
$399 but if you call direct and ask for refurb/seconds you can get a discount if they have any.

That's how I bought mine.

Yeah, they don't advertise refurbs but if you call and they have some it'll be $349 which isn't too bad for a near-new V1.
