Finally... have a little time to give my version of events on our 'Ring trip last weekend!! So many things to remember, far too much to put down, so just brief snippets to whet your appetites for the next trip, where I hope more of you will come along.
As you all know I met up with Tim my brother, Hoops, the Fandango, Booforty + Vanessa, and the EvoTecnik guys all at the Eurotunnel... Carlos, bless him, had this conversation with me on the phone... Carlos: "So mate are we all going to be parked together on the boat?" Me: "On the train mate, not the boat" Carlos: "Train? Yeah right, it's a boat... I want us all to park next to each other or in a line" Me: "No mate, it's a train... I'm being serious... have you never been on the Eurotunnel?" Carlos: "What do you mean, a train?? What, we take a train all the way to France? Is there like a bridge or something over the Channel?" Um, Carlos, you did say you're a railway engineer, right?! Anyway so as you've probably guessed, Carlos becomes quite a star of our trip, although he still had a way to go to match Steve in the "fame" stakes!! There we were, standing in the Eurotunnel carriage, talking about Steve's profession, and Jerome (EvoTecnik) wanders over mid-conversation... To see his facial expression change from smiling, to puzzled, to confusion, then a slow dawning comprehension, was amusing to say the least!! A "speed optimised " blast across France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany, let most of the way by my brother in the Alpina, got us to the Golden-wankerer/enkerer/somethingorother hotel where most of the guys were staying. Although, it did seem strange that the Fandango, who booked a Eurotunnel ticket, and made the hotel reservation, didn't have a clue where he was supposed to be going... "Carlos, what's the name of the hotel??" "Dunno... wankerer something.." "What's the address?" "Dunno"... "What's the telephone number?" "Don't know that either..." The drive across was pretty uneventful, save for the police having a good nose around our cars in a Belgian services (they were checking out the DXB, I'm sure of it), and Steve and Carlos somehow (and I don't know how) just making the exit off the autobahn at speeds well into three figures The Ring was, as ever, fantastic Lots of great cars, too many 911s in the Armco to think about (), pouring rain for most of Sunday, and the Fandango being recognised as "the guy with the DXB on Pistonheads - you're really famous... and I'm going to do you a big favour and take you for your first lap around the 'Ring... I have a 335 as well"... (said by Jimbo, one of the instructors, before pointing at a well-used E30 race car, with 335 badge on the back).... Thanks need to go to Tim, who kindly took the E90post boys out for passenger laps in the Alpina - I think everyone was impressed with his knowledge of the circuit, and the speed at which he drove. Was definitely beneficial following him around the circuit, improving my own lines and cornering speeds. Was mighty wet on the Sunday though, and the track was at places treacherous. It did however give the opportunity to drive at a slightly slower pace, and by doing that helping to perfect certain corners and complexes. I think the Fandango managed eight laps on the Sunday, Steve I think about the same, and Paul in his mighty M3 a few too. In total I clocked up 28 laps in my car, and went through a set of brake pads in the process Tim and I had the benefit of being at the 'Ring on the Monday too, which was lucky as it was a glorious evening, with blue skies, sunshine, and a sticky track... Managed to bed in my new set of pads too, although being race pads, they now squeak and groan like a complete bitch when trundling through traffic in London We drove only my car that Monday evening, and left with Tim seriously considering buying a manual 335i to turn into a dedicated 'Ring car for next season Away from the 'Ring, the dinners we had at the Pistenklause will stay in my memory for a very long time... I have not laughed so hard for such a long time... Of course, the laughs centred around Carlos and Steve - don't quite know what the others in the restaurant were thinking when Steve started wanking off the pepper-mill.. I had one of the most memorable weekends ever.. It was eye-opening at times, eye-wateringly funny almost all the time, and is a must repeat adventure for Spring next year. I'll leave you lot to come up with the captions for the pics below
