Dirty swirl flaps..... Off

Finally got round to blanking the swirl flaps off as they were leaking oil everywhere.

Good job I changed them when I did as they were caked up in carbon build up and didn't look healthy

I only took 2 pics as I was that into the job I just forgot.

Nice one mate - best job you can do - even with the updated flaps!

Tbh I'm not sure mate I would say it's not to dissimilar to my 330d.

As for cleaning mine were past it, I think and once you've got the manifold in bits id just blank the swirl flaps off its easier than cleaning I'd say. Unless there not that dirty

It's not that hard of really, I sort of know a little about engines (mainly bikes) and not scared about getting my hands dirty.

Luckily my pal helped me and he's a technician for bmw,

Everything comes off in a order and as long as it goes back that way you should be ok.

Seen worse but yes they are better out than in IMO, been saying this on here for ages if you have them longterm remove them these later ones are far stronger than the earlier versions less likely to have fracture/breakage issues but will/can create issue re leakage as you've discovered plus can have an effect due to carbonisation re overall performance. Wiith them out no leakage no carbonisation issues which equals better overall running.

Good job

Good job
Cheers Steve I agree been meaning to do this for a while and it is pretty straight forward and a worthwhile job like you said.

Worse than this I don't believe you

I was shocked at how bad the buildup was and can totally see how this would have an effect on performance as I'm guessing the whole of the inlet manifold is in the same condition as the flaps and the bits visible to the eye.

Where I work www.a1bnspecialist.co.uk/ we see a shed load of cars come our way with these issues but I've seen the later ones where the outercasing's have started to break up(being plastic guess whre they've disappeared too as you'll see below the plastic gets erroded over time

but when you look under the manifold oil sweating like this

shouldn't be ignored it makes a mess and its a visual indiciation that wear etc. is in progress.

These later versions are way better than the earlier versions which as you'll see below

are again caked up. The swirl flap pcitures above are from a 320d as you can see the guy had a broken swirl flap but it wasn't ingested the crap in the manifold actually stopped it in this case from being ingested. When I spoke to the customer and showed him the pictures I told him to spend £10 on lottery tickets as he might be one of the luckest men walking.

Best advise I can give is get them removed as you've done Matt. Prevention is better than cure the prevention is 4 or 6 blanks depending on what car you have and a bit of labour the cure it would seem(though less likely on the later cars is a bill for one replacement engine and a bit of inconvienance
