back in the day my parents bought a demo GM, was flawless running and no problems till warranty expired. then everything under the sun went wrong with it.

Demos arent as bad as people make them seem. I used to work for a dealership selling vehicles and MOST people dont kick the shit out of the cars. There are your fews idiots, but for the most part not too many. The cars are maintained very well and there are discounts to be had on the vehicles. The longer the car has been a demo, the greater the discount. Dealerships amortize (depreciate) cars on their balance sheet just as they would any other asset they own. So every month they write down the value of the vehicle a certain amount. I would assume you could get anywhere from 5-10% discount over and above teh regular negotiated price.

from my experience (which is pretty recent) you aren't going to get a huge discount on a demo. I leased one--again, did so because I wanted a break on cost and I don't care if the car blows up after warranty because I don't keep my car past the lease.

You will save about $2200 worth of freight and PDI and the vehicle will be depreciated by $0.10/KM for the mileage on the car. So for my car that had 3000KM on it, they took off $300(not a lot right?) plus the freight and PDI--total savings around $2500 less to bring at pick up. I also negotiated a 4% discount off list, before going the demo route which was also honored.

The only way to get $4000 off a demo is if it had 40 000KM on it--then you are looking at a used car!

Small downside. When they calculate the savings for mileage, they can either reduce the number of KM allowed on the end of the lease and keep your monthly payment the same or they reduce the residual value at the end and that moves your payment up. SO, at the end, if you want the same number of KM per year and the same payment, you have to buy the extra mileage up front negating your savings. Essentially all you will save is the Freight and PDI.

Still a good deal? Maybe if you are buying.

If I remember correctly, my coworker got 8000 off a demo 328i sedan (09 LCI). That is including the cash purchase incentives though.

$8000 off MSRP wasn't that unheard of 8-10 months ago. Wouldn't be that hard to believe it's possible still; being that nobody's buying cars right now. Dunno about a demo though... if you're having to stretch that much to get into it, what's the point? Buy a used 335 and mod the hell out of it for what you'd pay in lease payments on an M3. At the end of it, you own the 335 and have to give back the M3. I had this same discussion with a friend in his early 20's who thought it'd be the shit to lease a Lotus. He relized that he couldn't do a damn thing to the car and would have to return it in near pristine condition or pay huge fines for any wear / damage. Ended up buying something he could mod to his heart's content and not worrying about curbing a wheel, etc.

Not sure what other options he has, but he's definitely got metallic paint and automatic transmission. That's 42300. 8000 off is 18.9%. I don't remember how much the cash incentive was though (can't find it on bmw.ca right now).

I don't think it's outrageous. Anyone can walk in and get 7% off, plus another 1500 (3.5%) or something for cash buy. The rest is for used car. A new car pretty much loses $10k the second it's driven off the lot.

I just bought a mini and the dealer said he may be able to sell me their demo car and would be able to give me around $2k CDN off (on top of other discounts), but I didn't take it since it basically gave me nav for free which I didn't want (sorry i-drive sucks).
