I'm looking to sell a 325i msport e90 2008 45k and expecting about the same private sale.

I think the price offered would be fine if it was an E90 but would expect morefor an E92.

A quick look on autotrader brings up similar cars going at private sale for 12.5k and they seem to be the ones priced to move.

Unfortunately in my experience a car is never worth as much as you think it is. Whether this is human nature or whatever I don't know but my rule of thumb is always to look at the lower end of what similiar cars are on sale for in AT as a good guide. Don't make the assumption that just because there are a large number of cars similiar to yours for sale at £12k, that yours is worth that. Those will be the cars still for sale 3 months later. I'd say £10.5k is a very decent offer from a dealer for your car.

I've sold a car privately recently and i'd say it's the best way to sell. Can be a pita when people ring to arrange a viewing and then don't turn up.
I'd only sell to a dealer if i was desperate for cash.

I'm selling my winter runaround at the moment, had lots of enquiries including 4 who made arrangements to view and never showed up. One called on Sat, said he would be with me within the hour and never showed. Really don't understand why people do that although in the last case I asked him his name and he ummeddd for ages to then come up with a name. That set a few alarm bells ringing.

To contrast that I had a guy phoned yesterday, sounded very genuine, turned up last night when he said he would, really nice guy to talk to and complimented my car immediately. Pretty sure he will buy but wants another family member to try it first.

Tip:
Before haggling at all, ask when they would like to complete the deal - today, this week?
That will establish intrest, and stop short a deal with some fecking loser who clearly doesn't actually have the funds in place.
Think how your dealer sells cars, and employ the same techniques.

If 'really' interested, have a read of some Robert Caldini - 'Influence' is a great book lol

I tried to sell my OH's car last year. Let me just say that after 3 very frustrating months of dealing with time wasters, dreamers, test pilots, and "what's your best price bruv innits" I gave up and traded it in. Yes I probably got about £700-800 less than I would have from a private sale but in the end the hassle free nature of it was well and truly worth it.

And of course depends upon how valuable your time is.
I suspect I would never mess about for a few grand, but might be encouraged to spend eight hours for, say, £15k.

The easiest car sale I ever had was the one I was dreading the most.
An early Subaru impreza.
Sold to the first arrival, in cash.

The one I was looking to enjoy was a much higher priced and niche market S2000.
I nearly punched one idiot after taking three hours of my life.

Interesting how people have various experiences with private sales, mine go like this:

350z - Sold to the first viewer, no haggling or trouble, he transferred the cash and waited a couple of days for it to clear done.

M3 - Sold to the first viewer, had a few timewasting calls and a lot of 'Part Exchange' emails for some shitbox or another, ended up selling for less than I wanted to, but for £4,000 over the nearest P/X

S4 - Sold to the first genuine enquiry, who accomodated me in a crazy situation. Basically he called on Friday night and on the Saturday I was heading to London to collect my 335d. As he was in London, we agreed to meet and he pay cash, on the proviso that he then drop me at Baron's Farnbrough. I met them, he liked the car, we went from bank to bank closing his ISA's and as promised I arrived at Baron's with a £13,500 in cash in my pocket. I got £1000 more than the PX offer and I also paid £1000 less to Baron's because we'd agreed a cash deal was better for them - they didn't want the S4.

335d - I sold the 335d privately for cash 18 months and 30,000 miles after I bought it for a £3,000 loss over what I paid - good business. The bloke paid with a carrier bag full of cash which was all legit. I had a lot of nonsense PX emails for this before it sold, but I just ignored them or told them no.

135i - I sold the 135 privately to a guy through Pistonheads. He was the first viewer and paid by instant transfer then drove the car away the same day. It took a few days to sort out but was no real problem. Again I had a few PX emails but nothing too excessive.

Boxster S - This didn't sell privately after a month or two up for sale. Eventually a broker contacted me and saw the sale through for me - hence I lost a grand to him, but I also got a grand more than the kind of offers I had when it was up for sale privately. Does this count as a bad experience? I don't think so.

Golf GTI - Eventually sold privately here and I think both me and the buyer are happy - including mods, I lost just over £8,000 on that car but that is cars for you. Before that, I had a number of emails with stupid PX offers and so on, but no crazy price offers, no tyrekickers and no 'in the flesh' timewasters. One bloke did view and 'not buy' but he wasn't a timewaster as such I don't think.

So that's my experience basically. I'll always sell privately if I can until something tells me it's a bad idea - so far I've met some great people. If you find timewasters are a problem, tell them to fuck off on the phone before they even view the car!!

Raging Kileak, do you live in London? I think this may have a huge bearing on your car selling experiences? While I do enjoy quite a few aspects of living in the city, I find that the people who live in it are in the majority, complete ar*sholes!

Ah that might explain it then. Even the Londoners who bought your two cars were probably after those specific cars and where prepared to travel to get a good example. You tend to find these people are enthusiasts rather than the "within a 10 mile radius" AT search chancers which you seem to get far too many of in London.

I think in the 3 months I tried to sell the car privately, I perhaps encountered 2 or 3 people who I'd consider to be genuine buyers compared to the 10's of people who I could just tell were not going to buy the car just from speaking to them for 10 seconds on the phone.
