I have been using BMW oil since day 1. I used to use Redline/Mobil 1 in my other cars but I decided to stick with factory stuff this time around. I buy it by the case at the dealer.

I'm getting an early oil change; I was thinking about what oil to get.

The thing I don't like about "BMW Approved Oils" is I can't determine how much is marketing and how much is engineering. The former may be castrol or Mobil paying BMW a certain amount to be an approved oil maker. The latter, I don't know anything about. Obviously the car won't blow up with these oils.

My feeling is that a 5w30 oil doesn't to have the viscosity you'd want at the superhigh temps inside a smallish turbocharger, but clearly I'm no auto engineer. We've also read how hot the car runs at. I'm confident the cars can run hot but no so confident some of these 5w30 oils can do in sustained hot turbos.

I was considering a Castrol syntec 5w50, not for the brand but for the particular viscosity of oil. Royal Purple would be my first choice in terms of brand. It gets hot where I live. But, I decided to stick with BMW oil until I do more research.

Remember there are approved and non approved Mobil1 oils

The approved mobil 1 one in the USA is the 0W-40 one

Best one to get is the BMW one, then you know its the proper one

0W-40? Why is it that the dealer gives you 5W-30?

The Castrol Full Synthetic 5W-30 is approved, the Mobil One 5W-30 is *NOT*. Note that, as others have said, the Mobil One 0W-40 is an approved oil.

Not all 5W-30 oil is created equal.

I got billed $6.24/qt for the 5W-30 castrol at the dealership when getting my oil changed early, which is within $0.20/qt of what the local autozone charges for it.

I had my break in oil change done at an independent shop and they used the BMW Syn 5w-30.

i've use mobil 1 5w30 in the past (also in my last bmw). i'm not too concerned about it not being bmw long-life approved since i don't follow bmw's oil change interval, which in my opinion is too long.

however, i may just switch to bmw synthetic 5w30 in the future as it seems to be actually a tad bit cheaper than mobil 1.

other weird thing is bmw approves mobil 1 5w30 to be used if your oil is low and you need to top it off.

If you can buy BMW oil, do it. it's safer this way. why do you have to mess with other brands for? BMW oil is not much more expensive, in fact, it's the same or could be less.
