Has anyone tried to install the dash hood in a non-iDrive car?

I want to install a Nav / MP3 setup in my car. I have no problem with wiring / software / computers etc, and I have no problem taking apart the interior of the car.

My latest brain fart is to buy the dash piece w/ hood for an e90 w/ iDrive, and then fab a bracket to support an aftermarket Nav / multimedia system. I know it isn't cheap, shoulda bought iDrive, etc. but I don't care. I got the car REALLY cheap as it was on the lot, so I didn't have a chance to order what I wanted.

Any thoughts on parts, ideal systems to integrate, etc? How about cost of a new dash piecs? I'm just starting on this project, so I haven't done extensive research yet. I'm leaning toward Alpine to start, but looking for options.

hey, thanks! Any idea what the part number is for the iDrive dash / dash hood? Or where I can look it up? I'm going to check into junkyards, but I'm not expecting to find many.

actually had to put the project on hold because i can't get this part:

came out of a crashed e92. company called Bavarian out of Arizona.

Is the part you need an insert for the 2nd scoop - to mount the display.

yup...thats the one. its getting to be really frustrating. cheapest place i could find was circle BMW and that was like $800 plus an $4-500 core charge. ironic part is, the most expensive part is the actual lcd screen, which i don't need, i only need the housing.

Wow, that will be a BIG job. I applaud your tenacity.

My solution was to trade in my '06 without iDrive for my '07 with iDrive. Way easier!!

Yeah, that would be too easy. I've thought about it, but it's just another hobby for me. Besides, I'm planing to add all kinds of things that iDrive can't do - better Nav, CarPC probably, DVD/MP3, Internet, whatever else I can think of. Still in the planing stages.

I'm talking to a company about maybe making a hood that would integrate cleanly into the dash. Not as clean as the iDrive hood, but also easy to take out when I get rid of the car.
