Transmission playing tricks on 2011 E90
Hi,
I admit I haven’t searched around much because the issue I have is quite specific and I just don’t know what to search. So, if this issue has been covered in this forum or elsewhere, can you please point me to the correct direction. Here’s the problem. The transmission on my E90 (328i, 2011) is doing something peculiar. When I start driving with a cold engine, everything is perfect. Then, when the engine is warm already, and I restart driving, when I put the tranny to Drive, the car yanks twice. Normally, it should do it only once, right, if that. But no, this one does it twice. Not too hard, one might actually say the yanks are quite smooth, but still. Two yanks, and only when I have previously driven and the engine is warm. Gear changes when I accelerate aren’t as smooth as they used to be either. But they don’t bother me that much. The two yanks when I put it to Drive, these suckers do bother me. Also, at some instances—and I don’t really know in which conditions, but sometimes it feels after I’ve stopped at lights or something—I smell something slightly sweet. Not like oil burning, but maybe air condition leaking? That smell is supposed to be sweet, right? The car has 116,000 miles on it, it’s a high mileage car. I had the transmission fluid changed at 111,000. The issue didn’t appear after the fluid change, but about 3,000 miles after. So I assume it’s not about the fluid change. I do have a theory though, but I am not sure this theory is valid. Especially since I just had an oil change done at the BMW service in Atlanta. (And if you ask why I went to the official BMW service, it’s because in America it seems to be the only place to get good oil.) They didn’t report anything wrong with the car; I specifically asked if there were any leaks, and they said no. So there’s that. But back to the theory. My other car, a Ford Crown Vic, had parts of the cooling system changed, especially the parts that cool the tranny. Apparently—and that’s what the service guys told me—the Crown Vic A/C also cools the transmission, and since that part was leaking, it wasn’t cooling the tranny properly, and if they hadn’t fixed what they did, it would’ve eventually resulted in the death of the transmission. NOW, could I have encountered a similar issue on the BMW? I mean, does any of it even make sense? Does the A/C or something help cool the tranny? Could it be that there’s a really simple issue with cooling the transmission—and that’s why the yanking only occurs when the engine (and thus the tranny) is warm? Has any of you ever encountered anything like this? Or am I just panicking unnecessarily? Any theories? Any thoughts? All help is much appreciated! (Oh, and I have done the throttle reset, multiple times, to no avail.) Thank you all for your help! |

Hello again,
I'm quite surprised no one can even offer a theory. I just want to add that I haven't gotten any errors on the dashboard. But the yanking issue still persists. Thank you! |

I was having hard shifts during start and stop traffic, really bad clunking, holding gears, etc.
I brought it to the dealership, they did something quick, and it was fixed by end of day. Maybe all they did was reset the throttle via the gas pedal trick.
