we already had a full set of those craftsman "mini" wrenches. you can probably find them at any big hardware store. the 4mm is definitely much smaller, take a look at the pic I posted (that's a 10mm next to the 4mm)

I can hear a very slight rattle again. Is there an easy way I can tell if it's the wastegate on the front or rear turbo without adjusting the rear rod again? Would like to adjust it as little as possible.

So I had my mechanic try this after doing some other work. He did 2 turns, and the rattle was still there, so I had him do one more revolution, and the rattle is still there. I got scared that I was doing it incorrectly, and had him stop. It actually seems like the rattle is worse now than before.

I verified with him that he was turning it the correct way (Clockwise if you are facing towards the front of the car). Is it possible that mine is so loose, that it needs more than 3 turns?

The stupid rattle is driving me crazy. I'm on the verge of buying the RB turbos just to fix this issue once and for all.

It just might be the front turbo.

The rattle is present at idle, as well as coasting in gear. I have a procede, so once the car warms up, it triggers the rattle fix, but in the morning it sounds terrible. I thought the front one shouldn't be a problem at initial startup idling?

correct, but just weird the way you explained it because I can't see how you could adjust the rod from the top facing towards front of car.

I would've said counter-clockwise facing firewall or rear of car unless he did it from underneath. Just double check with mechanic as it shouldn't get worse if adjusted correctly. Towards fender and away from block with wrench on top.

Hows everybody's waste-gate rattle going after this fix? Did it return after putting on miles? I really wanna do this but needed some feedback first. Thanks

My car been seating at dealer with this same issue and it wont go away. I had wastegates replaced at around 18K miles. Now I have 28K, it rattles like a mofo. People keep pointing out that there is something wrong with the car, and when I tell them its normal they are incredulous. Anyway, they replaced the rod still rattling, replaced bushing and now going to replace the actuator. I am about to go out of warranty in another two weeks. At this point, it seems BMW can't fix this issue right, just like I have had 3 failed HPFPs in the car and every replacement was supposed to fix it, only the issue recurred. I may have to go upgrade route since BMW Turbos arent doing me much good. Sad.

Now wait a minute JP, don't you have upgraded Turbos? Are you implying they use same exact wastegates too?

My turbos are the "stage 1" variety: bigger compressor + clipped turbine

Are there any good reliable upgraded Turbos then that don't use these stupid actuators\rod\waste-gate assembly since my car had all of the changed and still sounds like empty cans?

So now I have the rattle. I found the turbos but not sure which wastegate is the one I'm seeing. I can clearly see and touch The wastegate of 1 of the turbos Is that the one I need to tighten up. I'm assuming the front is not visible from the top right?

The RB turbos have an upgraded wastegate assembly, so do the ASR turbos that Shiv just got

the one you can see and touch is the only one you can tighten without lots of work, might as well try it and see

If you guys don't have a 4mm wrench, make one. I took a piece of flat aluminum, maybe 2" long and 1/2" wide and filed a thin channel into it with a tiny file (jewelers file?) to fit the flat part on the actuator. Measured it with calipers to make sure I didn't go too wide. Worked like a charm and it was short enough to be able to turn about 270* around the actuator rod. Kinda hard to get leverage on, but it worked nonetheless.

Been about 2k miles since I adjusted it and still no more rattling.

It won't come back.
I did mine so long ago and it's still running perfect!
The only thing that might possibly happen is if the front one starts to tick.

That's pretty much what I did. I got a piece of metal and cut a 4mm slot into it.
