LCI headlights on pre-LCI car - Angel Eyes as DRL

Hi all,

I've got a late 2007 pre-LCI E91 with CCC idrive and the standard halogen headlights.

Currently looking to purchase some used genuine LCI halogen headlights and put these on the car. Believe they are a direct replacement so no need to swap bonnet and bumper.

Ideally I want the angel eyes to be DRL and on permanently without any other lights on when the car is started and running. I've also ordered some new CREE LEDs to make the Angel eyes white and bright.

I want to leave the light switch on auto so when I do drive into a car park or tunnel or when it gets dark, etc the headlights will come on automatically with the Angel eyes.

Whilst I don't have the lights yet (hopefully end of this week) I just want to know if it can be done or not and apart from coding is there anything else I need.

Been searching on the net and came across some conflicting posts so thought I would ask the coding experts on here if this is possible.

Whilst I have BMWCarly and it might be able to do this for me I don't really want to use it after reading what happened with another member in here so would prefer to be coded properly and by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks in advance for your input guys.

Firstly, in my opinion there is little value in this mod. The halogen lci angles eyes are very dull. They are not suitable at DRL's in my opinion. Even if you upgrade the bulb to a CREE led, the effect is disappointing at best.

However, if you wish to go ahead the coding info is here:

You may need to update your FRM module as well...

You'd be better off sending the light off to a specialist company who can change the rings first. Or do a xenon retrofit.

Thanks for this mate - much appreciated. Even in standard form the LCI headlights will be better than the standard pre-LCI headlights I have currently. Maybe somewhere down the line I'll consider getting the lights modded properly but will see how i get on with the CREE bulbs.

I got http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/bmw-20w...s-gold-edition for my pre-lci with lci headlights a few days ago. Here is what they look like in daylight.

Not bad at all even compared to the white LEDs I had previously, which hardly visible in daylight. Gets much better once it starts getting a little darker

Nice one thanks for this! Looks great and can't wait to get it done to mine. Might send back the other CREE bulbs I bought and buy the horizon ones, although I have seen 40W CREE bulbs.

Did you have to do any coding or was it plug and play?

Plug and play. Didn't do any coding, so they don't work as DRLs. But wouldn't want to run them all the time anyway. They are a real b**** to replace. The ones I had installed with the lights burnt out in just over a year (didn't install the lights myself though, so had no idea how hard it was to replace these bulbs at the time). Might not be the same for all engines, but I had to take out the air box on my 330i to get the bulb on the passenger side, as I didn't want to remove the wheel. The driver side was straight forward. It wasn't too hard tbh, but took me awhile to figure it out, as the only suggestions I found online were to remove the wheel and the lining. Just grabbed a couple of beers and went for the air box, as it was in the way

So is the above pic with your lights on as side lights?

My lights currently come on when I unlock the door.

I've changed normal halogen bulbs on my 330i and it's a pain. Thankfully the bulbs are easy to change at the minute as the LCI headlights will not have been installed on the car but once they are on it will be a different story.

Cheers!

Yeah, I turned parking lights on to take the picture minutes before I posted it. If I leave it on auto, the low beams are also on. But I've got nice white bulbs, so the two go together nicely. As far as I understand, coding for the halos to act as DRLs isn't simple. I believe there is wiring involved too. Might be wrong.

Fantastic - thanks for this - really appreciate it. I've order some new osram nightbreaker bulbs to go into the LCI headlights. In the headlight is the inner light the high beam light? Having looked on realoem it would look like both H7 bulbs are standard 55w bulbs. If this is the case I'm tempted to buy some high watt bulbs to be the high beam and have the nightbreakers as the main beam.

The inner is the high beam. Haven't replaced those and not even sure how to.

Cheers dude. The lights are not on the car yet so it's easy enough to replace all the bulbs. How on earth you meant to replace the bulbs when they are on the car with the lack of room is beyond me. Was difficult enough changing side light bulbs in my pre-lci halogen headlights.

It's not too bad. The driver side takes no more than 3 minutes. On the passenger side, as mentioned before, I had to remove the air box. Again, not a horrible job. Took me about 45 minutes, but I will be more confident next time having done it once. Still wouldn't want to do it too often.
