whining noise from engine

Based on the previous posts, lots of cars make whining noises. Some people actually like it and think that it is the design to enhance the engine sound. To verify if the noise is the result of a design, I am taking a poll.

Can you post an audio file or video with audio? What you call whining I think of as a low rumble. To me some turbos have a whining noise while NA engines don't.

This thread is useless without... sound.

The engine sometimes makes noise, hot or cold. I've heard the similar sound coming from poorly maintained V6's especially Acura Legend. The whining is not loud and almost unnoticeable from the inside with all the windows closed. But it can be heard from outside.

What you're describing is probably how the inline 6 engine sounds.

Kinda like a sewing machine a medium speeds, then ripping chainsaw at higher speeds. OK, maybe that was an exaggeration, but you get the idea.

Having come from Honda's in the past, I like this mechanical whining sound. Makes me at one with the machine.

it is coming from the engine. I rev (which I should not do) the engine on P and it still makes the noise.

Just wondering, what is the reasoning behind not revving at P?

Just to verify if the noise is coming from the engine or the transmission.

I see, so it's not coming from the car, its the whining reverberating in his head from reading some of the posts.

The 4.8L and 5L sure don't sound like sewing machines!

Try turning off the AC compressor (the snow flake button), in rare situations, I hear a whining sound too. But as soon as the AC compressor button is turned off, the sound is gone. I don't know if that's the whining sound you are talking about.

I reported this whining noise a long time ago. Look at my posts, I don't have many and you'll find it. I hear the noise with the widnows all rolled up untill the car is in the 4th or 5t gear(when it revs up) and when it revs down from 3rd gear down until I come to a stop. I got the auto tranny.
The techs claimed it's normal but my loaner(exact same car) I got when I went in for service didn't sound anything like my car. So the poll results make sense to me, some have it and soem don't.
Anyway I have gotten used to it and did not try to get it "fixed" becasue I firmly beleive the less the techs mess around with your car, the less hassle you will have with your car

From what you’re posting, the noise is the alternator. An overrunning “clutch” is used on the alternator drive pulley that allows the alternator to spin somewhat independently of engine speed. If the engine is revved up and shut down while at high rpm’s you will hear the alternator to continue to spin even though the engine is off. In other less complicated words...it's normal...
