These little pocket rockets can give the impression of speed and often leave the lights quickly...but as you say, they run out of steam pretty damned quickly as well. official figures on the Fiat are 0-60 7.9 and Max Speed 127mph. Max power 135/5500. M3 eater my arse!

Suzuki costs between £8,350 - £11,750 new. mini is between £13,715 - £22,565. Both without options.

What Car report on:

Mini - Equipment **
You'll need to plunder the options list

Swift - Equipment ****
Well specced for the money

The Mini drives well, but I'm not sure that this girl wants or needs a driver's car. Also if she's looking for something different, the Mini aint it as they're all over the shop.
+1 to that.
Great little run-arounds, but as Rockit says, expensive from new, with the toys.
A second hand tractor version (Our petrol cab is crap at MPG) would be a good buy though, with the right spec -cheap to run and low insurance, but not particularly unusual.

How about the Hyundai i20, looks good, plenty of kit, starts at around £8kish,leaves change for the insurance, which will be a killer in a rarely seen car.
For rare-read expensive for parts.

Agree with the Fiat 500, lovely looking, but expensive.

Perhaps Oli's missus has had enough of hers, worth a shout

Apparently the Hyundai, is great down the pod, and nearly pipped a E46 M3 last month, the pram in the boot proved to be it's downfall though, incredible!

Bet it'd have the DXB easy if they took out that pram...

My 3yr old in my miswahs Smart Car could give the DXB some stick off the lights. He can swear, give the bird to Carlos and still change gear

Based on the evidence I'd agree, with the DXB capable of outrunning the Starship Enterprise, albeit with the right weather conditions and importantly a prevailing wind, the Hyundai should be easily overcome.

However I failed to mention previously, that the Hyundai was being driven by Mr.I.AM Lardarse from the 'Pratts Bottom Amateur Dramatic Group', hardly a competent driver, despite his apparent new role as 'The Stig'!

A better driver, there could be a surprise

Thanks all Gave her a few ideas Seems she likes your ideas more than mine

Fiat 500, Mini and Suzuki Swift "Sport" are apparantely "really cool" hmmmm OK... but a convertible would be nice! Got to the bottom of what special means seems it comes down to it being convertible!

She likes the idea of a brand new hatch so is between that or a convertible, I did try to say they are FWD , hatches and faaaaaaar too modern, safe and not unique but she thinks a car that has a 1.4i engine is fast apparantely my MR2T is dangerous

As she said convertible would be nice so I went against all my older is better, no driver aids rule, gotta either be classic or fast, rag tops should be exactely that and suggested an SLK200K.

Well an MR2 is dangerous. Its a flimsy old car which folds up at the slightest though of an accident.

A mini, and 500 are way cool. Ok there slow as you like but she does not need 200bhp+
You do as your into performance cars.

MR2 accident.

Lucky lady to get £10k gift for a car. There must be loads of good deals around at the moment so she is well placed to get a nice new hatchback.

Shortlist Fiesta, Ibiza, Swift, Polo, Mazda 3, or similar. She needs to spend a couple of hrs going round the dealers and make a shortlist and then drive them/push for a deal. If she does not need finance she my get a yr's free insurance thrown in as well.

Your a petrol head, she isn't do her a favour and steer her down this route and she won't go wrong.

So far they have dismissed-
MG BV8 - too old
Alfa 1750 GTV - again too old
MG RV8 - too old! How can a 90's car be too old?
Couple of Porsche - she don't like them or to old
Lotus Elise -too hardcore!

Problem is she doesn't have a clue what special is neither does the mum and dad! She basically wants something that looks great and you don't see to often but doesn't care about performance or whether it is RWD or not infact she never even driven a RWD car beforewhile she likes the look of my many cars she doesn't like that they are mainly 'unreliable', use lots of petrol are fairly expensive to insure and require a fair amount of maintaining!

So is there such thing as a modern, good looking, reliable car that you don't see very often?

Go to the Seat dealer as well.

It's like VW, but without the £3k mark up. More sporty too.

Matt
Probably with you on this...my girlfriend has just bought a top spec 1.4 T-jet Sporting. The reason?? It was a bargain.

RRP - over £13k

www.broadspeed.com - £8.9k

Brand new, fiat main dealer supplied. But the good news is that we didn't have to deal with the dealers as they are beyond crap!

The car is extremely well spec'd and the 1.4 turbo engine is very good - and it's still quite cheap to insure. Economy is around 30-35mpg so not brilliant but hey...the car was a steal!

Oh...and it's nicely made. I've posted this on the forum before but it is just as solid as my M3!!

Alternatively...and I'm sticking with Italian cars here as at this price they offer some of the most interesting options, I reckon the Fiat 500 (esp. Abarth) is cool but also the new Alfa Mito is cool.
