OTOH the classic 2002 refers to the internal volume of the boot.

I still can't get excited about paying £30k + for a 4-cylinder car.

I can see in something like a Z4 which is supposed to be light, it makes sense. A 528i doesn't make sense to me.

Me neither - but better get used to it. We are now down to only ONE 6 cyl engine in the 3 series range, down from FOUR, 10 years ago in the E46. I think it is fair to say that the 3 series after the F30 won't feature any 6cyl and will probably feature a few 3 cyl engines.

That's why i'm staying with 6cyl for as long as i damn well can - there won't be any left in 10 years and we'll all be forced to have 3 or 4 cyl cars

Americans and Chinese buy gasoline-engine 5-series cars. Infact in the US and China, you can't even buy a diesel 5-series. Brits buy 520d as company cars. The number of company car 528i in the UK is probably minimal.

For both Yanks and Chinese, more cylinders = better.

diseasel do you just pluck this shit out of the air and post it as fact? More 3 series sold in China last year, never mind a specific 5 series model:

Beijing - Soaring sales by German luxury automaker BMW in the first six months this year enabled China to surpassed the UK as its third-largest market worldwide, the company said in a recent statement.

The first-half tally of BMW-branded cars doubled to 71,000 units, more than half of which were from the 3 Series and 5 Series models.

It also sold 4,500 units of its Mini brand, which along with luxury legend Rolls-Royce, is now owned by the Bavarian auto icon.

The locally made BMW 5 Series sedan sold 17,100 units, while both imported and locally built 3 Series cars moved 18,500 units - a 130 percent surge over a year ago and the fastest in the upscale midsize segment.

Its joint venture with Brilliance Auto currently has a production capacity of 44,000 units a year, so soaring demand far outstripped BMW's local production.

Last week the German business daily Financial Times Deutschland quoted the company's personnel director Harald Krueger as saying the automaker plans to ship 10,000 of its 3 Series models from Germany to meet the booming demand in China.

In an interview with China Daily in June, President and CEO of BMW Group Region China Christoph Stark also said the company can barely meet current demand.

Last month BMW broke ground on a new facility scheduled to begin operation in 2012 at its venture with Brilliance Auto in the northeastern city Shenyang.

The world's largest premium carmaker expects to boost annual capacity in China to 300,000 units over the long term.

The company's flagship 7 Series sedan registered stunning growth of 127 percent in first-half sales to about 10,800 units, while the compact BMW 1 Series almost quadrupled sales to 4,200 units.

Combined sales of the X5 and X6 sports activity coupes totaled 11,000 units over the period.

Its Mini brand has already exceeding its 2009 full-year sales of 4,368 units.

If sales in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao are added, 81,679 BMW and Mini brand automobiles were purchased in the six months to June, a 99 percent year-on-year surge.

Actually chinese buy more 520i's than any other model in the 5 series range (edited for Xenon)

There are new laws in china on pollution.

America is well on its way there too.

Its only 0.2 off the 535i 0-62 mph.. Price/Performance it looks the best buy of the lot
The 528i has been available since the F-10 was released.... but it was a 3-litre NA gasoline engine, now it is a 2.0 litre turbo engine. The previous 5-series had a 530i, which was also a 3-litre NA engine.

Also the large majority of BMWs sold in China, are made in China.

I don't think I have ever seen a 520i in China... if my office internet wasn't a heap of junk I'd go on the BMW China website, but it is either not sold or isn't one of their big sellers. The 320i is sold in large numbers. There is also a 325i in China, which isn't even sold in the UK.

I still can't see too many people getting excited about a big expensive car like a 5-series having a 4-cylinder engine, unless fuel economy is the #1 priority in which case you would buy a 520d. Unless you are Chinese or American, since diesels haven't been invented there yet.....

None of them have matching engine sizes.

Obviously I know it isn't new, but my post was really to highlight just how far BMW have gone this time, 800cc over the badge.

Correct, the C63 is actually a 6.2L engine. It's always seemed like there was a mistake made by the guy that ordered the badges or something as the badge behind the wheel arch actually says 6.3 specifically like a statement of cubic capacity.
