Engine Rattle? - NEW TURBO!!!!!!!

Cars done about 8000 miles so far and in the last couple of weeks I've had a strange rattling coming from underneath or close to the engine bay when I start the car. If I rev the engine then it happens when I release the throttle.

Only seems to be when I start the car, after about 10 mins it goes

Had BMW Customer service out today (very good service - just selected BMW MOBILE SERVICE on iDrive!) they attached computer and it resulted in NO FAULTS

Going to have to take it to dealers this week or next.

Anyone else had this or can suggest what it is?

sorry mate, was watching the grand prix this morning

could be anything from a loose something or other, to a engine fault which is only there when the engine is cold, which obviously will need rectifying ASAP

definitely try and get hold of them...

It's VERY possible to machine them and fit larger compressor, turbine wheels etc.

There's a thread over on the US site begging for some donor turbos so the R&D can be done.

I'd be serously interested if I were you...

Definitely try and nab them...

Tell them you want them for wall decorations or something, or that your "lad" wants to take them to workshop class on a turbo show n tell.

Will try, but I suspect they will want to send them back to BMW/Mitsubishi for inspection seeing as they have only lasted 9000 miles!!!

Well, finally got the car back

When I asked why after 9000 miles did the turbos need replacing the service guy just said - " Just one of those things" !!!

So all of you with a 335 just listen when you start the car and rev the engine a bit you might here a metalic rattling noise!

Hmmm. Where did the rattle sound it like it was coming from? From behind the engine bay and closer to the driver? This has happened to me a couple of times now.

I've got the 6MT, and I thought it had more to do with when I pressed the clutch to switch gears between 1 and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd. However, if it could have to do with releasing the throttle...

Would you here this rattle at higher speeds/gears?

I didn't

Mine was random to start with then every time I started the engine and blipped the throttle -there it was.

I can only describe it as if as soon as you blipped the throttle and released the accelerator someone dropped some coins on metal!(sorry not a very good description)

It was quite obvious when it happened. I also had a high pitched noise (bit like a worn fan belt ) sometimes at low speed.

If you read the last issue of EVO mag, the long term test of the 335i also had a turbo replaced. I emailed the owner and he replied saying he had received a couple of other 335i owners with the same problem!!!

Wonder if thrashign from cold contributed to the failure? do you thrash yours from cold?

No, always warmed the engine/oil first, got a nice little gauge under the rev counter that shows you oil temp. Have a look.......

oh, sorry forgot. It's only in the petrol versions!!!

Thats a bit weird tbh, both turbos with that sort of mileage doesnt sound right. That rattle you describe sounds just like a loose exhaust heatshield but the whine sounds a bit more worrying.
