depends on what city you are going to live in and if having a car is a necessity or luxury. If you are going to a university in a place such as Los Angeles yes you should have a car. But If you are going to school in a metropolis type setting like New York, Chicago, or San Fran where parking is hella expensive and challenging, then no.

Well to some, it may be like a ferrari in their head. It isn't a cheap car and what is so wrong with caring about a car?

To the OP, I took my 335i to university and I can't say I regret it but it is difficult to take care of... more so due to other people than yourself. I clean it every weekend. But it is much harder to find time during school to clean it; however, virtually every week i manage to find time. You just have to be very careful with where you park and must be willing to walk if necessary to have it in a safe spot. I rarely park between spots. Always try to find an end spot or if its parallel parking then the first or last.

Thats my two cents.

I had my e36 in college and it was fine. Most people will respect your property but there are people that will get jealous. I remember a local frat took a 300 lbs boulder and hurled it onto the windshield of a parked jag.

I agree with a lot of their other members here. It's simply a car and yes I'd be pissed if anything happened to it but I drive it so that I can attend school which hopefully in turn will pay for a nicer car. Plus that's what insurance is for. If anyone knows De Anza College (Cupertino, CA), you must understand my fear.

Yup. This year I've seen a GT-R, E60 M5 and a Porsche 911. Guess they gotta make it to class on time...

Everyone in my school either drives a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes. Astons, Lambos and Ferraris are in abundance as well.

Back to your question, I live on residence and live about an hour away commute to school. Parking is expensive on campus but I find it a lot more convenient having a car rather than to have to take transit. Also, it would suck to have a 335i just to park it at home.

Try coming to East Lansing's MSU.
Top 10 best cars on college campus. This is where you will want to slap every international kid you see with an X6M as a winter beater.

Lol right? Its all about knowing where you are. I've been thru what most people would call "the ghetto" and not a damn thing happen to me nor my car. Now imagine how much safer it is when they have security/ police patrolling the entire time... just park within their route and avoid being in the back of lots and tops of structures and you're perfect. Most people are too chicken shit to touch your car anyways.

It really is. You can read up all you want about how to please a woman, you can look at all the diagrams in the world, but just like the clitoris, you won't know what the hell an apex is before you actually find it.

I think you have to factor in the area and what kinds of cars others are driving at the school you're going to. If it's the kind of school where there are lots of students with nice cars, it's probably no big deal. If you're headed to a school like I went to that's in a small, humble town, and the students all drive pretty modest cars, a nice late-model Bimmer may be a vandalism magnet, especially if you keep it clean and park it out away from other cars to avoid door dings.

Other factors I'd consider would be whether or not there's a BMW dealer or good indy shop who will be able to service the car near where you'll be living, and whether you're okay with it sitting out in the elements all the time, probably only being washed at whatever car washes are available in the area.

If you're unsure about taking the car there, is it an option to go without the car for a while and see (a)if you feel like you even need it there, and (b)whether or not you feel comfortable having it there as you get to know the school, the area, etc.?

I guess it depends on where you can park it, since you probably wont use it everyday. Then where can you wash it and all that. Weather issues depending on where you are. But why go home on a bus when you can get back home is your BMW. Choice made!
