Concerning the lower residuals, they are more than made up for the $4500 eco credit and the $900 tax credit.

Because of the Eco Credit, BMW did not have to support the 335d to the extent it supports the other cars. Leasing and financing are quite competitive as a result.

If the Eco Credit goes away, I would wager the residual and MF will improve.

See my pic below...driving 65-70 mph, I finished the tank at 643mi (actually 1036km) and I still hadn't got the low fuel warning - it would have easily gone 700mi.

npd: Very nice post!

For people who live in the world of more expensive diesel and don't like the flat torque curve and the nice ZF6HP28 tranny also found in the 550i and 750i, don't buy the car.

I have yet to hear from a single D owner who is disappointed with their car.

There is 335d Coupe, in europe from 07'
Just wait till it hits USA too . No idea if there's also Manual , but i guess there is.

70% of BMW's production are diesels, i think they know why , and also people know why they buy diesels .

It is a great car, torque is amazing ,i had a 320d but ... 7500rpm > Diesel , that's for me .

No plans right now to bring the E92 335d to the States at the moment but that could change.

Not sure why you would guess there's a manual transmission since one isn't available.

I have put 34,000+ miles on my '09 "d" since July and I get 37 mpg or better for each tank of fuel.....yesterday, I got 38.7mpg for a 412 mile drive.
On the drive home from the BMW Performance Center, my new '10 "d" got 36.4 mpg and it was new with no miles.
The 335d is no M5 or M6.....it ain't supposed to be.
If Motor Trend wants to do a long term test....let'em ride with me for a few weeks.....if anyone thinks the 335d with a auto tranny is no fun....let'em ride with me for a few minutes.
If you drove 34K miles in less than a year, I should hope your mpg would be in the high 30s. Obviously your driving habits aren't "mixed" and you're going to meet or exceed the EPA highway mpg estimate. In your case, the 335d is definitely the way to go! But for someone looking for a 12K mile/year lease, with more mixed driving habits and MPG probably closer to 21 (335i) or 30 (335d) the ownership cost is basically a wash (given today's lease terms + ECO credit availability + fuel costs).

BTW, I readily admit one (possible) advantage of a 335d over a 335i is reliability. With the 335i you have the HPFP, piezo injectors and turbos/wastegates all as sore spots. Not that the 335d is simplistic in comparison but who knows... It's not likely to be worse! Probably another reason to go with the 335d if you want to buy and drive it long-term rather than lease.

Even with the $4500 eco credit and the tax credit? It costs less than a similarly equipped 335i at the end of the day.

+1

I started out at mile 0 ahead of a 335i for cost, and it's only getting cheaper and cheaper as I drive, highway OR city. Goes to show the lack of consistency with financial programs, though, I'm leasing at 1.9%, not sure how that compares to current d or i rates.

Yeah, then again my 335i isn't an '09-'10. I love the car itself, though.

They're all beautiful

Think its 2.9%.

I can only speak from limited experience, having owned my "d" (my first diesel) only since last summer but I've found that last summer diesel prices were closer to regular than premium and now,in winter, they're a couple of pennies more than premium. In fact, driving through CT the other day diesel seemed to be about 5 cents cheaper than premium at several stations. And the summer vs winter price difference I've seen is borne out by what I've read.In short, during the winter diesel buyers (in the Northeast,at least) are competeing for supplies with those who heat their homes with oil.And I can assure that heating oil is a good deal more expensive in December than it is in September (or May).

And,for the record,I consistantly get 42-43 mpg on the Interstate at a steady 65mph (me being a much more "sedate" driver than many BMW owners).
