I actually like the look of it. Shorten it up, make it a 2-door and you've got yourself a strong GTI competitor.

I also prefer its looks to the X1. I had both an X1 and X3 as loaners recently, and while I can see owning the 3, I just don't understand who would buy the 1. 40k for something that looks ugly, drives like a tall Civic, has no off-road capability, with poor storage space. It boggles my mind. :

I guess that's why my local dealership has so many as loaners...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Reminded me EXACTLY of a GTI....

Really? Because I own two BMWs (e36 M3 & e92 335i) and if I was shopping for a fuel-efficient car I would absolutely consider this.. especially with an N20

ahhhh what?! It was so cool though! Well I guess they didn't really need it because the GL was big enough and they were kind of the same thing.

you'd really choose this over a 320/8

Oh yeah definitely. I love the 3 series but this looks like it could be lighter and just a really fun car. I've often considered a GTI and if BMW stepped into that category (which this seems to do), I would be hugely interested.

I know this is a stretch, but an M Sport with a more aggressive front and rear bumper setup could be really awesome.

Put an N55 in that puppy and I would consider it.

I would have liked a 335 touring but they are not available here

Reminds me of the Chevy sonic... If I wanted an Asian inspired design I would be driving a Toyota, Honda, or Subaru, not a BMW. Too many car companies have jumped on the Asian design train, the new Ford Escape is disgusting and this isn't much better. Don't get me wrong, some of them look good but it seems to me the Asian econo car style has overwhelmed the 2013 lineups, not for me.

I can understand that logic, but this seems far larger than a GTI. At least substantially taller.
