It's 'cleaner' overall in the sense that it fits compactly in the armrest. Obviously that solution in full won't work if you want to avoid the head unit's aux-in.

Now, that said, using a 12V-5V charging adapter in place of an inverter probably makes a bit more sense, but in terms of needing to tuck all the electronics somewhere, it's probably whatever if you're in the trunk anyway.

What about just wiring 12v to this buck converter and step down to the 3.3V and wire to the AEX. I would use a relay for the 12V with the remote on from technics harness or from the amps remote.

Here is the stepdown powersupply to get from 12V to 3.3, no need to mess with usb 5v power.

Thinking that putting the AEX in the trunk and running optical into an alpine pxa-h800 would be a nice set up.

Kivic One looks enticing but spendy at 285.00.

You have to buy as a beta tester by sending them email.

Seems like the kivic is more like adding an Apple TV for audio and video. I would just be interested in audio, that's why I think the airport express with its digital audio out is the ticket. Those things can be had used for a song, and if the power supply hack is easy, why not.

The price is too steep I think. Don't see many people buying this. The AE is near perfect for this application and the power supply hack is easy as pie.

I just ordered a Kivic One...although my Air Enabler works great, I want to use AirPlay Mirroring so I can see my iphone apps on my NAV screen...I bought a MMI to composite cable and I am hoping I wont need a expensive product like this one for my Audi S4....would be clean if I only needed the Kivic One.

Cool!

Talk to technic or bimmertech about piping in the signal...look at technic's analog video input in the armrest.

I have an airport express voltage question, so far I have found the following:

Original ae1084: uses both 3.3 and 5v, but has superior audio quality with no jitter or drop out issues
Current ae1392 (the square one shaped like the Apple TV 3): uses just 3.3v, but has jitter issues that appear unresolved.

What about the middle version, the ae1264, this one had the form factor of the original ae1084 (plugs into the wall). Some reports I have seen on the web say it too only uses the single 3.3v supply. What about the jitter issue? Could this be the one that makes the most sense to use in a car?

As far as I understand it, jitter only becomes a problem when you use a "touchy" external DAC. I use the FiiO DAC you can get on Amazon for under $40 and it works perfectly and sounds great.

One of the later versions, but not the latest. It's the one that looks like ATV.

guys, IMO you are really missing out... - if you are going to BUY something, buy the Air Enabler. it is literally perfect for the application and the support from Qui is literally the best support I've gotten for any product, ever. Period.

I just gave that product another look and it seems to be a very good solution. On the website they even list some DACs you can use other than the one that comes with it. I am now considering getting this and using the AEX in the house to extend the network.

How long does the Air Enabler take to boot? Also, I am still looking for a way (app) to auto-connect between the iPhone and the AEX. The wifi auto connects but you still have to enable airplay every time. Any ideas? Even Jailbreak apps are fine for me.

40 seconds. At which point, you'll be able to connect to the wireless network and start AirPlaying your music.
There's a FAQ up on their site
