So I had my lifters replaced about a year and a half ago. In that time period I have only heard the ticking one day. Granted I live in a warm climate, but even on days in which it dips to about 35 degrees I have not heard any ticking. Any chance that the lifters DO provide a final solution? I have one year left in my CPO and I would refuse to pay $1 out of warranty for a clear engineering fault. Do lifters work for some people long term? Also, has anyone had a goodwill repair done after CPO expires?

I'm glad I finally found this thread. The guy I bought my Z4 from told me the noise was normal. What a liar. After reading this thread and educating myself, I will definitely be back at the dealer this spring to get my car fixed. Needless to say, even after this problem is fixed, I will not buy from the same salesman but if they fix the problem, I'll still be a BMW customer.

Will the service department, at this point, still go through the steps of bleeding, then lifter replacement before cylinder head replacement? Sounds like the definitive fix to this problem is cylinder head replacement.

Also, since this is a known problem, why was my car sold to my as CPO if this is a problem that can potentially cause shorter lifespan of the motor?

MM328i-i've talked with my mechanic...the lifters is not the final solution...sure this forum attributes to very little of the 3 population..but if this many people have had this problem...i can't believe BMW hasn't inssued a 100K 10 year warranty fix like they did for the HPFP for the 335 guys...i know itd cost them a huge huge dime and thats inevitibly why...but at the end of the day i wont buy another BMW because of this..

aries326- BMW strait up doesn't believe this be harmful in the longterm...so as long as the customer isnt complaining up a storm about a new head or lifters they aren't gonna tell you about it. If you read on it they say no harm is to be done, but they resdesigned the head?

you will have to complain...you will proboly get new lifters and a bled system which i read there not doing but the stealership might do to save a few bucks...then if it persists..they'll replace the head

thats the process

I bought an after market warranty through national warranty and I'm hoping it will pay for this. Its paid for everything else thus far ie door lock actuators, new horn, and new folding mirror. The thing that sucks is my car only has 34890 miles on it and all this has been replaced. And I have a ticking noise from the engine. I think this will be my first and last BMW.

a guy said earlier aftermarket warranty companies wouldn't validate his fix because BMW has a service bulletin on this

if you get it fixed i may buy a warranty for mine and just drive it till till it breaks or until something happens...its worth it to buy a warranty for a faction of the price because the bill is horrendous

Please note that the BMW warranty has not only the miles at 50k, but the years come into play too. 4 years or 50k which ever comes first, the warranty runs out, unless there is an extended warranty. This looks like stevo8's problem, as his is a 2006 with no extended warranty, so he ran out of the 4 years given by BMW even though he is under in miles.

Sometimes allot gets lost in the typing....

So my car is 2008 with 17200 miles. I was thinking of waiting until spring to get this thing fixed, but since warranty is 4 years, I should be trying to get it into the dealer ASAP? Or, since I bought this car used with CPO, CPO should cover this, right?

Either way, I hope they fix this. I don't plan on dumping my Z4. I'll probably keep it and hand it off to my boy when he gets older.

I guess long term is pretty subjective. I've got a old 2001 Jeep Cherokee Laredo in great shape at 115000 miles that I drive in the winter. I've got a 2002 Honda Civic with 92000 miles that is my daily driver. I bet for some people, when the mileage gets that high on their cars, the vehicle is almost ready for the junk yard. Not my vehicles. I take good care of them and I plan on passing this beauty along to my son. I'd like this car to be in best shape possible. As you said, if there is no harm to the engine, then why the redesigned head?

Hopefully they fix it. If not, when this car is paid off, I'm buying a different brand and doing my homework before making the purchase.

If it was me, I would start now. With the CPO warranty, you have to deal with the $50 deductible. It took six months, and multiple trips to the dealer going through the BMW "process" starting with the lifters until BMWUSA approved the new cylinder head. Depending on the time duration in your own individual case, I would rather deal with it this time of year and enjoy the Z4 during the warm weather IMHO.

Thanks for the advice! As soon as the weather improves and the car roads are dry, I'll drive this up to the dealer.

95 pages long and many many years of posts, but this thread really should have been separated into different threads for NA vs. TT engines. Just sayin'...

BTW, the best of luck, as your ride is very easy on the eyes.

If you choose, keep the thread updated on the progress, as the more information the better for those going forward with this issue.

Huh? This only pertains to NA N52 family engines. The N54 and N55 are very different engines and to the best of my knowledge do not have this problem. There is a separate thread for the high pressure fuel pump issues that those engines have.

If you just have a lighter ticking, it seems to be the lifters.

Anybody can provide information that doesn't agree with that?
So if the service bulletin doesn't say to replace the cylinder head, why is it in the list of parts in the service bulletin?

It looks like the website made an error and listed the parts needed for the HEAD replacement, and not the LIFTER replacement. Here is my invoice for the head replacement, which looks allot like what the website added to the lifter replacement TSB incorrectly.

So did you ask for a lifter replacement or just said there was ticking and they automatically replaced the head for you? Interesting they would do that when first they only replaced the lifters for me, then when I came back they immediately said it was likely the head (obviously the service girl was familiar with the issue).

Also, if that is the real service bulletin then wouldn't they automatically be replacing heads all the time? Where does it tell them how to replace lifters?

I had the lifters replaced first and that did not solve the problem so the head replacement was the second step.

The link below provides the TSB from another member with a good summary. It is for the lifter replacement. There is no TSB for head replacement. The other website made the process rather confusing and they just mixed data together. Ignore it.

Click the link below, it is the best link I found to date with a good summary and the lifter replacement TSB.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=1310

This is part of the TSB from the above link:

A cylinder head casting number that does not match will require replacement of the 12 exhaust camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) as per Repair Instruction RA 11 33 050, Removing and installing/replacing all rocker arms. Only the exhaust camshaft and rocker arms have to be removed in order to replace the hydraulic valve lifters. Do not remove or replace any intake camshaft valve train components.

PARTS INFORMATION
Part Number
Description
Quantity

11 33 7 605 330
Hydraulic Valve Lifter (HVA)
12

Refer to EPC for additional gaskets, seals and bolts, as required by the Repair Instructions.

So, I just dropped off my Z at the dealer today. He didn't ask me much questions. I called them up, asked for one of the SAs by name. He was recommended to me by one of the local BMWCCA members and member of bimmerpost. I told him I bought the car at his dealer last august, I've got the N52 motor and it ticks intermittently. That was it. I didn't have to produce a video of the car ticking or anything like that at all.

I asked him what they were going to do and how long it would take. All he said was that they would have to open it up and look at the numbers. I assume he was referring to the cylinder head casting numbers. So, it looks like the dealer will stick to the January 2009 TSB and skip the oil bleeding technique and go straight to replacing the lifters.

As someone else has mentioned here, I haven't been able to find a TSB as well regarding the replacement of the cylinder heads. Will I need to have the cylinder heads replaced as well? Who knows? From perusing through the thread, it looks like cylinder head replacement is inevitable.

So more in the saga of this ticking sound...

Just got my car back today after replacement of the cylinder head! I start my car and it makes this huge thud when the engine starts and shakes the car. I thought, oh great....
I open the hood to hear an even louder engine. I did notice a new block in there. So now I get a rough start and the engine is just louder in general and still makes some sort of ticking sound. WTF??

Here's video:

That seems to be more or less "normal" tick that you get from the engine. It sounds like what mine sounds like after the repair and the ticking sound is coming from the front and is much softer than the abnormal lifter tick found towards the rear left part of the engine.

Here's a video with what my engine used to sound like (not my video but a video I found that convinced me I had problems with my Z4) This is the true lifter tick sound.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/EhLP-RkFGXM

Anyway, my repair experience with BMW of Rochester (Rochester, NY) was A1!!! My SA was Steve Barnard. I just called up and let him know that I purchased the Z4 from them, it had the ticking and brought it in the same day. I didn't get any hassle about trying to produce a video showing that the tick had occurred with my car. Two days later, I get a call back saying the car was ready. Amazing! Here's the receipt:

I've been reading horror stories on these sites about poor BMW customer service. I'm sure there are more people having success stories but they don't jump on a website to share them. Anyway, here's my success story and hopefully this has fixed the problem. When this car is paid off, the next one will also be a bimmer. Thanks BMW! I was close to losing faith in you guys.

I'd top up the oil, check the spark plugs and run it for an hour or so.

Thanks for providing your SA info on here. I'm one that has had a crappy experience. Several videos provided, but SA will do nothing without duplication. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, mine is extremely loud. What frustrated me was him saying BMW NA will not allow them to do anything without duplication, but I read about several people receiving service based on video. Was yours ticking constantly or intermitently? I kind of understand them having to duplicate it, but IMO it is VERY obvious from the video that it is the lifter tick.

BTW - Flea, your video sounds normal to me. Mine sounded (actually louder) just like the one Aries posted
