Question Nitrogen Tyre Inflation recommended by BMW?

"Nitrogen Inflation
Filling tyres with Nitrogen means that your tyre pressure will remain correct for longer because the rate at which Nitrogen passes out the walls of your tyres is slower than oxygen."

More here:
http://www.atseuromaster.co.uk/nitrogen-inflation.htm

Have you tried this?

You are joking yes ?

They say .."Nitrogen molecules are slightly larger than oxygen and so seep out of the tyre about 3 - 4 times slower than compressed air. This means you will see a decrease in pressure of around 1psi every 5 months."

True no doubt but if you check you tyres pressures only 4 times a year you have negated any possible benefits of using nitrogen IMO.

I use the 80% stuff - its free.

Its to scare idiots who never check their tyre pressures into parting with money - they probably deserve it.

Isn't that misleading? After all, if you fill up with the free stuff - air - it's 78% nitrogen anyway, so are they saying it's the ~21% oxygen that actually escapes? Sounds like marketing hype to me!

Simple answer, whenever you fill up ya tank, check ya tyres - simples. If you can't remember to check your tyre pressures, you probably shouldn't be in charge of a car...!

Its funny reading through the OPs previous threads. There seems to be a trend...

OP i would buy a little tyre compressor. The ones that come in new BMWs, or a continental one. You can check, and fill, tyre pressures on your drive, or anywhere. Do this every two weeks minimum. Use free air, it will be fine!

Exactly my thoughts Mob.

BMW would recommend anything car related that increased their bottom line.

You can now buy fragranced engine oil from BMW, once burnt and ejected via the exhaust system it attracts the attention of other BMW's,unbelievable!

couple of years ago I was at a tyre fitting place and they asked if I wanted Nitrogen instead of "normal air" as N doesnt deflate/constant presuree blah blah - I stood there listening for 20 secs and then said is it free - no he said its £1.50 per tyre. i said no thanks, if its free then chuck it in if not then Ill stick to normal air

I try to check my pressure weekly so I didnt see the point, plus when you back home and need to top up the air unless you have a N machine at home what are you going to use?... normal air and just diluting whats in the tyre already

Is it? Thought it was sand?

Anyway, just checks yours regularly and before long journeys.
Don't wait till the iDrive tells you that you have low pressure / puncture.

Way too low by then.

I have a michelin electric air pump
Digital tyre tread depth gauge thingy
A analogue pressure gauge

Is excessive? Just like to confirm the pressure with 2 readings
and measure the depth now and then to adjust pressure accordingly.

if I spot any weird uneven wear.
