Limp mode 1 week after install of JB+!?

On the way home from work yesterday I got the dreaded "Engine Malfunction: Reduced Power" message. Has anyone else gotten this with their only mod being JB+, not altered from the factory middle setting?

Is it almost certain that since it induced this limp mode I have a code thrown?

The circumstances: It was very hot and humid here when I was driving home, I had the A/C on "Max" for parts of my drive (only about a 20 min drive) and the engine malfunction message appeared in the last 5 minutes or so, after some WOT driving and possibly not fully warmed up yet. I got the message while I was about to pull off the highway and honestly, the "Reduced Poer" didnt feel nearly as reduced as I would have expected. When I got off at my exit and there was a red light I turned the car off and on again. No long cranks although the idle seemed/seems a little rough (then again this seems to be true of bone stock n54s).

Any thoughts? My main concern is that I threw a code.

I started having the same issue over the last couple of weeks with my SSTT. I am down in Miami and it seems ever since its gotten warmer and more humid, I go into limp mode about once every 2 weeks. The code I have been throwing is this one, always at the same RPM too...

30FF:
30FF Exhaust fume turbo charger, low pressure side
Error will not cause a warning light
Error is not currently present
Test conditions have been completed

Event 1Odometer 53152kms 33027miles
ambient pressure 997.66 hPa
ambient temperature 27.75 °C
pressure in front of throttle valve 134.00 kPa
speed 2,048.00 rpm

If I remove the SSTT, I do not go into Limp mode. I was running the JB1 for months without issues.

Pisses me off I feel like I have to shell out the money for the BT scanner now, I wouldnt have gotten the JB+ if I knew these issues were going to come immediately.

BT scanner is a great tool to have if you're running any tune no matter how mild it is, hell I would even get it if I'm stock because the N54 has so many weird random issues. People get LIMP MODE even when they're stock so don't freak out until you pull the fault code.

I will be the first to admit I am no expert when it comes to these tunes. But I dont think it takes an expert to go out on a limb and point the finger at the tune when I have 16k+ miles on the car with zero problems and zero limp modes and then a limp mode within a week of adding the tune. Dont get me wrong, I knew this was a realistic possibility when I ordered, but that doesnt mean I am happy about it.

Don't forget the HPFP. You are putting more load/stress on it now, causing a known weak part to possibly be getting esposed now (when you WOT).

+1 I experienced the same thing twice over the past 2 months with the JB+. Same rpm range, same code. Weird...

Strange, I havent read about this specific issue on here before with just the SSTT/JB+ level tunes. Did both of you just use the BT tool to clear the codes? Have either of you been in for service since the limp?

I'm not sure if there are 2 levels of limp mode (can anyone explain exactly what limp mode does mechanically, does it just disengage the turbos?), I know some people say there is a lot of shaking and such, but I was able to drive essentially normally for the minute or 2 it took to get to a red light and I just turned the car off and then right back on and everything was fine.

Just shut off and restart the car. Then everything is normal again. It's really weird because it happened when cruising at normal highway speeds. Not at WOT pulls. Apparently this code refers to a boost leak. But my car is stock otherwise

It seems like limp mode (1/2 full engine icon) just cuts boost because the car feels much slower maybe like a 330i with a poor tune. If you get the 1/2 engine + SEL (service engine light) then you really have like no power and maintaining 50 mph on the interstate is hard to do.

Just pull over and shut the car off, wait a minute and restart it. This usually cures the LIMP mode. If you get SEL then I had to go to the dealer and have my HPFP replaced, could not clear that light.

Thanks for the info, that's exactly how it felt (1/2 engine icon only) - I had no problem maintaining 55ish for a minute until I reached my exit.

I beleive that error code is a possible boost leak...

Same thing, turn the car off and on, and its all good. I know the code indicates a boost leak but I highly doubt it. Its always thrown under a very light load, at a low rpm, SAME rpm, and never thrown with the tune out. I track my car heavy (without the tune) so if I had a boost leak, it think I would throw a code after 45-60 minute track sessions in 90+ degree heat, which it hasn't yet.

I think it's best for you to contact BMS tech support instead of shouting it out over the forums. Terry will most definitely help you resolve that problem in a flash.

Why not just take the jb+ off and take it to a dealer?

Yeah its not so much that I am concerned about the car breaking down, I think its clear simply restarting the car clears up the engine malfunction. My main issue is I am concerned about taking it to the dealer next time now that this code is likely thrown (and I really didnt want to shell out another 300 for the BT scanner).

For issues like this I think it's often helpful to get input from other owners. This problem may not be limited to the JB+, and could provide useful info regarding hot weather performance. If there is a fix from BMS then that should also be posted if the vendor approves.

You shouldn't be having any codes in the first place with JB+. On your place I'd get to the bottom of this problem by resolving it with Terry's help.

Yeah I contacted Mike@n54tuning who arranged the group buy - maybe this was the wrong person to contact though. and as you said, I really am just looking at input from other owners to see how normal this is at this point.
