Weird Subwoofer problems
Specs
Amp: Rockford Fosgate P500-2 500 watts 2 channels Subwoofer: Rockford Fosgate P1S4-12 Punch P1 SVC 4 Ohm 12-Inch 250 Watts RMS 500 Watts Peak Subwoofer Heres the events that occured that led me to my problem Originally I had a JL w3 and it ran fine. I removed my sub and amp in order to test my friends to see if his amp and sub were working. When I reconnected everything my amp turned on and sub was dead. Replaced the sub with the same one. Again everything worked well, then I removed everything to bring my car in for the recall. When reconnected the sub stopped working. Bought the sub listed above (Rockford Fosgate) When plugged into one of the channels it does not hit at all. When plugged into the other channel of the amp it moves back and forth uncontrollably and actually begins to SMOKE. I dont know much about mobile sound but I know enough to know that is not good. If there is anything you guys can help me with to fix this that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Start checkin the grounds and power connections.
Start checkin the grounds and power connections.(with a meter)
Could be your grounds or power connections are high resistance now that they messed with the power connections. If it works on one channel and not the other and you have a good low resistance connection sounds like the amp is bad. Pictures and measurements would be better than words. |

You should definitely make sure both power connections are low resistance. With them disconnected from the amp, you should check by measuring resistance from the amp-side of each cable to the appropriate battery terminal (not the end of the cable itself, since the connection is the most likely source of issue, and in the negative cable's case, part of that is the car itself).
It sounds like either way, though, your amp is already blown. If you had some kind of ground loop or connection issue, it'd show up on both channels. Personally, I'm always leary of disconnecting my sub with the amp powered. It should be designed to tolerate an open circuit, but being able to drive loads from 2 ohms to infinity does leave plenty of room for error.

You already had a thread on this about 7 months ago.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=802134 Did you go on a really long vacation? Seriously, your amp is probably fried, and maybe your sub, too.
