Volvo Gets 500 HP

So I don't know how many people look at the TopGear website, but I was a bit surprised this morning when I saw this article this morning about the Polestar S60: http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/v...ept-2012-06-18

Here's the most interesting part, the performance numbers
Quote:
That's right, five-hundred-and-eight horses, shoehorned into the most sensible of sensible family saloons. That's not an increase, that's an assault. That 3.0-litre straight six ‘T6' engine has been significantly worked over; it boasts modified cylinder head and combustion chambers, a modified inlet manifold and air intake, specially manufactured conrods, a Garret 3171 turbo and a Ferrita 3.5in stainless steel exhaust system.
Now I know this is a single-turbo w/ upgraded internals & the S60 isn't exactly compared to the 3-series, but if Volvo puts this into production, I don't think I could live with myself after a Volvo pulled on me

If they put that exact car in production and could keep it "competitively" priced, I'd give that car serious consideration. They seem to have done the correct things chasis wise to accomodate that kind of horsepower. Offer it in a matte finish and I think you'd open a whole new market to Volvo.

You will never get the driving feel of the M3 from a Volvo, but this makes me worry that the projected 450 HP TT in the F3x M3/M4 might not be enough power from the factory

I wouldn't say never. A ford can currently outhandle the M3...

Yea I saw that R&D (?) comparo between the M3 + Boss 302. Wasn't really "fair" in the sense they're comparing a 5 year car against something that just came out & was more designed for a track (Boss 302 vs GTS be a bit more "fair").

Kind of an excuse, but when they compare the next gen M3 against everything (new RS4/RS5, new Mercedes C AMG, new Lexus ISF, Volvo S60 Polestar) I'm sure natural order will be restored.

We can argue semantics all day long; the point is that the automakers are stepping up their respective games across the board to the point that nobody can rest on their laurels. From my vantage point, that's a good thing.

With enough money you can make a Geo Metro pull on you. A neighbor down the road has a Saab 9-3 that could pull my 335i (before RB's and when not running meth) That being said, it's still a "sensible" and "safe" Volvo.....which I find badass. Now that would be the ultimate sleeper!

Seriously, look at the super saloons in the 500+ Club: Aston Martin Rapide, Audi S6/S7, BMW M5/M6 Gran Coupe, Cadillac CTS-V, Jaguar XFR, Masterati Quattroporte GT S , Mercedes E/CLS AMG, Panamera Turbo S & the Volvo S60 Polestar

Who looks like they don't belong?

Polestar has been tuning Volvos for a while now. It will never be sold here.

If it makes you feel any better, the article I read on it said that the non Polestar version has 300hp, AWD, a six speed, and still takes 6 seconds to get to 60.

Not sure what article you read, cause this is from that Top Gear article too

Quote:
As such, the Polestar S60 will accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and hit somewhere north of 186mph. That's fast right, but exactly how fast? For reference, a Ferrari FF will hit 62mph in 3.7 seconds.
They confirmed AWD too

A friend/coworker had the Volovo S60R. It was an awesome looking car but handled like absolute garbage. He was constantly complaining about the suspension and how poorly it handled. He only kept it for 2 months before trading it on an Evo X MR.

I remember when that came out & Volvo called it an "M3 Killer". The engine was spot on but it drove like a wet diaper.

Hence why I said the "non Polestar" version of the S60. From carscoop:

The regular model is motivated by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six delivering 300hp (304PS) to all-four wheels for a zero to 100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h (155mph

They are actually the newest "tuner" (in quotes because they are available only through Volvo dealers) in the US Volvo market and currently offer only a single tune for the S60/S80/XC60/XC70 T6 engines.

Keep in mind the Polestar S60 is only a concept car that Polestar released, not a pre-production car that Volvo released.

As an FYI, my background has been tuning Volvo's for the past 10 years

The Volvo S60 T6 AWD is available with 304BHP from the factory. A dealer installed Polestar tune will bump it up to 325BHP. The S60 T6 R-Design AWD comes with the 325BHP tune from the factory. Both variants are currently only available with a 6-speed automatic gearbox here in the US.

I wouldn't say the Volvo S60R handles poorly (I have one). Sure, it may not handle as good as an Evo X MR, but it handles very well straight from the factory. It's a bit of a hog weighing in well over 3600 pounds compared to the EVo, so it's not suited for an auto-cross. With a few tweaks of the suspension (springs, upgraded anti-sway bars, chassis braces, etc) it handles quite well, actually. About as good as my 335is on the street.

The Volvo S60R is better for circuit/longer road courses. It's flat torque curve, 6-speed manual gearbox and 4-piston Brembo's with 3300mm rotors all around make is a competitive car on tracks like WG, etc.

YEP -- MY b, just re-read what you wrote. I know that Polestar/Volvo decided not to go through w/ the C30, but if there's enough demand for the S60-P(?), I'm sure Volvo would pull the trigger.

Pretty sure the non-Pstar S60 has the same performance all the other cars I listed non-super version (Caddy CTS has 300 HP V6, 335 has 300 HP turbo I6, etc)

Wtf? Did he like the Evo X MR suspension better? From what I hear, the Evo suspension is just terrible for daily driving.
