More reliable than a 335. The 3.0L engine is pretty bulletproof HOWEVER, many other things can go wrong with the car and will be costly to fix.
BMW's are not really known for their reliability in general. The 328i is a "relatively" reliable car I would say.

They're both great cars and have been solid. No issues on either of them. I'd recommend a 2009 as it's a 'refresh' of the body style (it's called LCI) Updated tail lights, updated headlights, updated hood, etc.

A lot of people have had issues with the XI's transfer case. Me being one of them. It was shot to hell at only 45K miles. Although BMW recommends you never change the fluid, the transfer case fluid should probably be changed every 30K.. |

Yes the only thing all N52's have to go through is the valve cover gasket around 80-90k miles. And a ticking noise but it isn't a problem..just ride "exercise" the car every now and then and it should pass. With regular maintenance you could reach 200k in a stride.

My friend bought my old '07 328xi from me and it's been very reliable for both of us. It's got 140K on it now and still runs like it's new with nothing out of the ordinary going wrong. I hope I didnt' just jinx her

Transfer case, you can take care of with an expensive fluid change. Valve cover gasket is a DIY if youre so inclined. Oil filter housing gasket is easily fixable on the N52, Vanos valves and their seals are also an easy fix, automatic transmission fluid change is a must along with servicing both differentials, oh, dont forget that coolant flush because the electronic water pump is over 350.00 for just the part......but these cars are reliable!
seriously, Ive had mine for just a couple of months and have had to do a LOT of servicing.....but the car has over 100,000 miles and drives like its brand new. the motor is very strong and smooth, smooth, smooth.....the interior is holding up great, the doors shut easily and quietly, the wipers operate without a sound, the suspension is crisp and predictable, so I have to say I love BMW's philosophy and approach to car building. Are they expensive to maintain....yes. do you have to keep on top of them all the time...yes. For me, I do it because I want the car to keep performing and feeling exactly as it does right now...which is amazing. My dodge pick up on the other hand is another story!...I love the truck...but I dont fuss over it.....I change the oil and keep it maintained...but I dont worry about it......The Bimmer on the other hand..... Transfer Case fluid is not expensive
Transfer Case fluid is not expensive and there isn't that much of it.
The auto transmission change is another story. |

LOL, I was clearly joking. I have had my share of issues. Ignition coils replaced, misfires, MAF replaced, and malfunctioning transmission. However, they were all replaced under CPO.
