Does Porter Cable 7424XP normally make grinding noise

I just got a Porter Cable via mail order. I put on the backing plate and turned it on. When on low speed there is a grinding noise inside near the hub. It seems to disappear when the speed is increased. Either that or it gets drowned out. I checked that all screws were tightened and no rubbing. Is this normal or maybe I'm doing something wrong or did I get a dud

I think what you're describing is normal. You're probably hearing the gears at low speeds but it gets drowned out by the motor at higher speeds.

Thank you. I did some searching on detailingworld and it sounds like it's normal. Man I'm surprised there is not more posts about it because if you aren't used to it it sounds like something is wrong.

I remember thinking the same thing when I first got mine, I could've sworn something was wrong with it. 3 years later and I don't even notice it anymore.
