Smile Is the 335i a shit car to own?

Hi There,

I just joined this forum and was looking into buying a 335i with the n54 engine. I finally saved up enough and am ready to buy my first car. So my question is that what are the common problems with these cars? Has the HPFP problems been fixed? Since this is my first car i plan on keeping it for until 250k or 160miles. Whats the typical life of the turbos? Should i look out for any diverter valve issues as i read that a lot of cars that run the air through the engine instead of a bov have a sludge manifold problems.

Also what are some reliability upgrades you guys recommend? (catch can system, bigger intercooler, bigger oil cooler) Whats the problem with putting a bov on the n54 engine?

I know these are a lot of questions, but since I am putting a lot of savings into this purchase and plan on keeping it for long I want to be sure, this will a reliable car for me. I have driven my friends 335i and I am totally hooked.

Thanks A lot for the future advice.

335 is not a reliable car to begin with.....comon problems are HPFPs, wastegates, and turbos. Best advice is to buy CPO

90k miles... about to have to do about $600 of non-maintenance. Otherwise, awesome car so far!

Buying a 335 is like a lottery, you can get one with a lot of problems, or a problem free one. CPO is the way to go if you don't want a brand new one. Personally, I bought mine brand sparklin new, had it for three years now and haven't had a single problem with it.

If you have two cars to drive, like a late 90s beater, then the 335 is fine. You get mad at first when it's at the dealership for 3 days and they don't call, and when you do, they are vague and say they're working on it. But you get used to it. When you pick your 335 up after having a 328 x-drive for 8 days, it's pretty exciting.

i would go for a 2008 CPO, best route if you want a n54 and you can pick one up pretty cheap

Sounds like you would be better off with a Ford Mustang GT 5.0
Its faster, handles better, cheaper to maintain, runs reg fuel, cheap oil changes.
You keep saying that you're "saving up". A bmw 335i is not the car for you.

I totally understand the pay for play part. I just dont want a 5 grand repair bill 4 years down the road or never ending problems. I read somewhere putting a bov on a 335i causes it to run rich and bad for the catalytic converters.

Thanks

I could have bought that 2 years ago but i thought it was worth the wait to save up and get the 335i instead, I am concerned with ridiculous repair bills like for 5 grand for a blown turbo or due to sludge in the engine.

I bought a non-cpo used, have dealt with HPFP which I expected and that is it. The common problems suck but for the money you won't find a car that you'll have more fun in.

I have not had any problems with mine. I'm at 40K miles.

I haven't made any of the upgrades you mentioned.

My prior BMW is still on the road. It served me for 158K miles and only the driver's fog light wiring went awry; I didn't fix it. I have no issues with BMW reliability.

If you abuse the car, you may not get the same results I have. What I mean, is if you use it as a race car, it may not be so reliable.
