Help with feathering issue
Hey Guys,
I have a 09 335i x-Drive that’s been having an issue with feathering on the inside of the front tires. I bought the car used and had an alignment done after I bought it. The BMW tech had already preformed the alignment before he informed me that the rear tires needed to be replaced. After the alignment I went to a local shop and had 4 General Tire G-Max as-03 (non-run flats) tires put on and balanced. I told the shop not to align the car but they tried to charge me for one anyways. They tried to tell me that the car needed new struts and shocks due to chopping on the insides of the front tires. I called BMW and they told me that the struts normally do not get replaced unless they are leaking, which mine were not and the car’s ride has always felt normal and not as if I was bottoming out on every bump I hit. I didn’t hastle the local shop on the alignment because the car felt like it was driving normal. Over time though I started to notice road nose and that the car was pulling to the right. I took the car back into BMW for an alignment and even after the alignment I still noticed it was pulling to the right, so I took it back to have them check the alignment. The BMW Tech pulled me out and showed me the feathering on the insides of the front tires. The driver’s front seemed to be worse than the front passenger’s side. I asked the tech if it was my struts and he said no my struts were fine. He didn’t really give me an explanation as to why it was happening, just that the car was probably not properly aligned after the tires were put on and over time the car wore the tire incorrectly. Since the tires wore incorrectly they were going to continue to wear in that pattern and it would get worse over time. I only have about 16,000 miles on the tires and the front ones have to already be replaced due to the excessive wear on the insides. I don’t want to put new tires on the front and have this happen again, so my question is does anyone have an idea of what could be causing my feathering or has anyone had this happen to them? The General Tire G-Max as-03’s are a 480AA tire so they should not wear this easy. Thanks in advance for any advice. It sounds like your toe could be slightly off, or perhaps you have some worn bushings.
How does the tread look on the rest of the tire? If the outer section is pretty meaty still you could flip the tires and get more life out of them.

I would take the car to a dedicated suspension shop and have them inspect your bushings.
You can flip your tires in the meantime and maximize the life on them. Just switch the driver front with the passenger front, and vice versa.

update
Hey I have an update for you. I got back from the dealership and had them check out the alignment again. According to the tech, the alignment checks out and he put on two new front tires and took it for a test drive. He came back and said that it didn't drive like other 335's and said it would cost about 100-200 for them to diagnose the issue. He said he though it was either a wheel bearing, the front differential, or the transfer case is sticking causing the car to be stuck in awd. They kind of pissed me off because they put the new tires on even though I told them not to if there was an issue with the front end. Also I wanted to note that I did start hearing a vibrating humming noise from the front drivers side at higher speeds 40+, but I thought it was the uneven wear of the tires. The new tires are making the same noise. I'm going to jack it up tomorrow and see if I can pinpoint a bad bearing or a leak in either my differential or transfer case. Can you think of anything else it might be? I should probably examine my differential and transfer case fluids for any metal, but I don't have any fluid around the garage to refill what I take out.
