run flats vs. traditional for an 08' E90
Question. Is it safe to use traditional high perfromance tires on an E90 (08' 328xi 4DR) vs. run flats?
I have run flats for winter but found some good already mounted Bridgestones on OEM rims that are "non-runflat" for Spring/Summer/Fall. Am I missing something (other than a spare) here going the non-runflat route? voiding any warranties, CPO wise? Thoughts? Suggestions? |

Many people here have made the switch and never looked back.

Yes, lots of people on here really hate RFTs, so they opted for other non-RFTs. You have so many more options!

I have an 08 E90 and i switched to non-RFT's after the first year. Will never go back.
For RFT's: - Our suspensions were designed to work with RFT's. - RFT's give you that great "planted" feeling and great steering response because the sidewalls are stiff. - RFT's offer better protection against a catastrophic tire failure at high speeds. - RFT's will get you to a repair shop if you lose air pressure. Against RFT's: - The ride can be punishing to you and your car on rough roads. - Most shops won't repair them if you pick up a nail or screw. - RFT's are heavier, which negatively affects performance. My Conti DW's weigh 30 pounds less (for the set). - RFT's are expensive. - RFT's don't last very long. I've got 40K on my front DW's and they still have tread left. - Enthusiasts that know a lot more handling than i do claim that good max performance summer regular tires handle better than RFT's even though RFT's have better initial steering response. - Good Non-RFT's are quieter and smoother. Given those pros and cons, you can see why so many of us have dumped the RFT's. The interesting question is: "Why did BMW choose to equip our cars with RFT's?" My guess is because they are safer at high speeds, especially autobahn speeds. |
