Engine Air Filter

2011 328XI, 34,000 miles

Factory warranty/Maint is up in December, I will grab my last free oil change around November and was wondering if anyone has got BMW to replace the engine air filter under maintenance,

CPO warranty kicks in for 2 more years, great car so far.

Per the BMW CBS maintenance schedule engine air filter replacement is every 3rd oil change, which is usually between 40,000 to 50,000 miles.

Pay and dealer should never go hand in hand. Efthreeoh is correct they will replace it at 40k. If for what ever reason you want it sooner then order the filter online and replace it yourself. Takes about 2 minutes to do on a 335 and about 15 on a 328 (i think you had to take the box off... It was really easy to do).

Really? What's the airbox on the 328 look like? I know the stock air box in the 335 is extremely easy to open up, and my old E46 330 was also extremely easy. Just 4 clips around the edges and it pops right off.

It's totally different on the 328. The air box has hex screws that have to be removed. You have to remove the box in order to do that. Process is a piece of cake, I'm no mechanic and was able to do it on my old 328 with no issues. I also wound up replacing it with a eurointake box.

The 328 sure looks like it would take a lot longer than 15 minutes to replace.

The you tube video I found is 20 minutes long and he had obviously done it before and already had all the tools he needed out. He actually says it's a pain in the @ss, lol
It's not.. Make sure you have a hex screw driver set.. The process is pretty simple. Even on my first try I had no issues and I'm no mechanic.

If you read the maintenance manual it explains the airfilter change interval. Show the dealer the same.

And way too many on the N52 airbox I might add.

If you guys can do this job in 10 minutes that's great........Being an IT guy I don't have tools set to go in my garage to work on cars............when the warranty is up a new car takes it's place.

All I wanted was an answer on if BMW is replacing the air filter under maintenance.

For starters that is NOT an air box for a N52 328 (looks a bit more like an euro box because they use a cone intake)Also like you I'm an IT guy but being a BMW owner I invested in a basic tool set, downloaded the Bentley manual in pdf form, and made friends with a good mechanic.

Take it from me. The stock N52 air box is very easy to remove, open, and reassemble. Only thing you need is a torx screwdriver set. It's a hell of a lot easier then what the video shows, which again was not an N52 air box.

Took me about 30 minutes the first time.

Took me about 30 minutes the first time.
I think I could do it in half that the second time.
Although not a car mechanic I am use to turning screws.

not trying to be a jerk i promise....but if you can figure out how to fix a computer you can definitely change an air filter.

disclaimer: I also work in IT and change my own air filters.

Sorry did not mean to hurt you bud, just thought we could save you some bucks and believe me, its good to get your hands dirty once in a while, especially with this little task. Spend your money wisely, they'll rip you off at the dealership.

The bmw dealer initially refused to change the air filter after the 3rd oil change. Eventually they changed it but I wonder how many forget to change it thinking it is CBS.

If I wanted to change the filter I'm sure I could but I have better things to do in my spare time than more work. Summer is short here and I would rather be boating or golfing.

I edited my original post so that it doesn't say that I may just pay for the filter if it's not covered under the BMW maint. GASP at the though of spending a few bucks, will you guys lecture me next on that I should mow my own lawn and shovel my driveway myself , lol

Unless your dealer sucks they will replace it under maintenance if you ask them to. If they give you grief about it find a new dealer.
