Cleaning 335i Exhaust

Never had a posh car b4 with a fancy exhaust, I think it OEM twin pipe jobbo, if so is it made from stainless steel?

So was wondering what cleaning stuff for both

1. The outside
2. The inside bit, currently black as the ace of spades

Thanks in advance

The stock exhaust tips are just plated I believe. The Perf Exhaust is stainless with chrome plated tips.

What you can do is get a mild abrasive metal polish and go to town on them to shine them up. To get a head start on the insides get some 000 wire wool to get rid of the carbon build up then move onto the polish. Once you have that done use a high temp metal sealant which will repel water and make future cleaning easier. Re apply your sealant every 2 weeks to maintain maximum protection.

I use Blackfire stuff which is very good (polish & sealant)

Ta Had a quick look at Halfords site and seem to have two versions of Autosol a 75 ml and a 75 g one. Which one you use I guess the ml one is liquid and the g one must be some type of cream

Though cant find any supplier called ELBOW for grease!!!

A sealent for exhaust me little old Golf going to get rather jealous if it sees me polishing and sealing the Beamer exhaust end

Get the autosol tube as its thicker. I had to use a bit of wet and dry and then one of those polish Bits you put on to a cordless drill/Dremel. Once it's sorted a bit of autosol on a MF will keep it nice.

The factory finish on the 335i tail pipes is not chrome/shiny, its a satin alloy look finish.

All you need is wire wool (brillo pads) to easily maintain that look, inside and out.

Take care, the rear edges of the exhaust cut-outs on the plastic rear valance are very sharp, i've got several scars from nasty cut fingers when they get stuck between the tail pipe and the valance while trying to clean the top portion of the tail pipes!

Nothing better than blood and wire wool all over the exhaust!!

I found that Shiny Sinks from Tesco is best at £1.69

I tried a few of the dear polishes, but nothing as good as Shiny Sinks.

My tips are polished and I believe my exhaust is standard.

Don't suppose you have a pic of a standard exhaust somewhere?

I've got some pics at home of them when they were new.

Maybe yours have been polished by a previous owner?

They probably look nice polished, but I'm a bit lazy, brillo pads are easier!

Here is mine. It is standard isn't it?

Ignore the fact it is not clean.

For inside the pipes I've got a rotary wire brush for my battery drill, works a treat with a bit of autosol! and reaches in further than doing it by hand. Well shiny in under a Minuit each pipe!

I keep a microfibre towel in the compartment under the boot and just wipe off residue every other drive or so - takes about 10 seconds literally and is no hassle at all - carbon never gets stuck onto the pipes so it is simple to polish up when i have more time.

I use this metal polish wadding which brings the exhausts up perfectly and lasts a long time to boot:

Autosol will leave no protection.
Polish them after with some HT wax or similar.

Am I the only person who can clean my tips to a spotless finish with just soap on a cloth?

It takes about 6 seconds to do mine, they get bloody filthy after 3 or 4 weeks (talking jet black!) but a quick wipe with a wet cloth brings them back - the soot just never sticks. I can wipe it clean with a finger tip if I fancied it.

Maybe as mine was put on by previous owner as a 'mod' the tips are not standard and thus shinier and easier to clean

Autoglym's alloy wheel cleaner works well. Especially when the exhaust is hot!
