Add me to the fuel pump failure group...

Should have known. Had the car two weeks and she died on me.

Has anyone gotten anything out of their dealership for the hassle and headache? I expect better for a 45k car that is two weeks old.

I haven't heard of any fuel pump problems out of Chevy Impalas or Ford 500s.

The most PATHETIC part of this whole thing is that here we are, 9 months later since the first failures started happening, and BMW is still selling cars that die within weeks, or even just days of driving it off the lot.

Shame on BMW

Did the fuel pump go and the car never started again or it showed sign of failure??

I was on the highway and the car just lost power - at first I thought it was a vacuum leak but after a few miles that didn't account for the intermittent hesitation. Pure blind luck had it finally give the goods about a mile from a dealership. The car sat and I pushed the SOS button to get a tow. After 20 minutes I decided to start her up again and she fired up. I was able to drive her the mile to the dealer and there she sits today.

Once at the dealer (not the one I purchased the car at) I was given a loaner in 5 minutes and was on my way. Now the 328xi is ok, but NOT what I bought and I'd rather not be stuck with this thing for long.

Hopefully I will have my car back soon!

Peace,

Dean

Dealership called after I called and left a VM this morning. Says there is no definitive time that can be given and BMW is only issuing fuel pumps with a valid serial # of a failed unit? I wrote BMW NA from the BMWUSA website this morning. If my car isn't returned within the 30 days starting today - I'm going to lemon law it. This is insane to have a 3 week old 45k car just up and die.

You'd think I just bought a Fiat...

they got a bunch of fuel pumps in lately.

so the wait is not as crucial as before.

i really wonder when they are going to start making new pumps.

i even heard fuel pump failures was also due to programming error, not mechanical.

I have not had any symptoms of pump failure except for several (less than 5 times in 4 months) long crank times. I asked my dealer for a new pump when available. My dealer ordered a new pump several weeks ago and called me today to have it installed this week. It looks like BMW is going to replace the old pumps with the revised ones from Bosch. It will probably be like the oil cooler issue - no recall but if you ask you will get!

Update. My SA called last night to tell me that my car should be ready on Wednesday of this week. YEAH!!! OK, I'm a bit overjoyed at present as I was imagining a long drawn-out battle to get my car fixed, etc. 3 business days total and she will be back!! I'm looking forward to getting her back.

Thanks to all of you who offered support, comments, etc. If I don't get her back on Weds. expect another update with a few expletives thrown in for good measure.

Don't worry, you will get a call from your SA shortly. There were a lot of HPFP shipped to the dealers. I just had mine installed last week.

The dreaded long wait for the HPFP are over. Everybody can relax now.

Straz,

I'm in Milwaukee, WI. Not exactly the metro-center of the known universe. I was amazed that I was getting my car in just three days - while I'm not happy the pump failed I am happier with BMW now that they are getting things done in a timely fashion. It's all tentative at this time as I don't have the car back YET, but tomorrow if I get to pick her up I'll post the results.

Should I call BMW NA if my dealer tries to pull any stunts about it being a month wait?

Yes, you should. But I doubt your dealer will tell you that it will be a month before you get the HPFP.

Let us know what happens.

Update: I did get my car yesterday (Wednesday) and the fuel pump was replaced. The cashier told me my warranty covered 1500 and change in repairs. I don't think she even looked up - so I told her it damn well should have as the car was 3 WEEKS OLD. Why do they act like they are doing me a favor?

I get into my car and drive away and my fuel tank is empty. I just paid 45k for a new car, it dies within 3 weeks and I can't get a tank of gas for my trouble? They sure were insistent on my ensuring the loaner car had fuel upon my returning it.

I did get an email from BMW NA saying they are 'looking into' my case. This isn't over yet - how can I trust a car that died after 3 weeks?

Peace,

Dean
