Instrument cluster faliure!!!
Hi
Has anybody heard of this happening on an E9x before? Heres what happened. Last week I hit a pot hole with both RHS wheels and when I restarted the 'replece brake pads' warning was on. A quick reset and that was sorted. This morning I caught a speed bump at the wrong angle (not a big bump though) and the instrument cluster just went dead. I restarted the car and it is the same. The indicators, wipers etc all work, the speed and taco are stuck at the point I hit the bump and the I drive had lost the time and date and can't show any of the service status or check control lights. What do you think has happened? A cable shaken loose or soemthing more sinister? Cheers Nick |

Oh dear doesn't sound good.
Most likely either the ribbon at the back of the cluster is physically loose or the pins themselves have come away than anything more sinister. Get it opened up (by BMW if you have warranty) and checked. It's unlikely to need a new cluster. Do you get "Instrument cluster failure" pop up on iDrive? If there's a sensor or electronic issue you would. If not it's most likely physical.

Thanks for the quick reply Mega. I get nothing in the way of warnings on the Idrive. I mean litterally nothing. It will give the oil level and let me reset the clock but that is it. No diagnostics are available. Just greyed out and unselectable.
I am not under warranty but from the way it happened I'm hoping it is just a loose connection. Is it a big job to opene it up? |

it's easy to take out the cluster, just two torx nuts at the top (I think t10 but not certain). Just wiggle it out and check the connections into the cluster. The cluster itself looks like it can be taken apart as it has tabs to connect the back with the front, but not sure what you can get at in there.

Cheers. I'll give that a go. It must be a connection. Do you know where it connects at the other end or how it connects to the Idrive as that is also not working?
Radio/sat nav etc are fine but the service info does not work. |

Just to let you guys know It was the connector on the back of the cluster. Pulled it out and replaced and all is good.
Cheers for the info. |

Glad to hear nick. Sounded like the connection immediately!
Amusingly, mine is now doing something similar. At least I know what to try But mine has triggered an iDrive warning so I now also need to get diagnostics done to get fault cleared or it will keep coming up. D'oh.... Time to call BW Chiptune...
