328i to 335i Rear conversion questions!

I got rear ended a few weeks ago and I figured while its on insurance's dime why dont I just pay the difference for a 335 bumper, and tack on a performance diffuser. I talked to BMW and they said this wouldn't be a problem as long as i paid anything the insurance wouldn't pay.

anyways the car should be ready this friday except for the exhaust ! which they had to cut off right behind the muffler to prevent the tips from melting the plastic.

Now heres where I am stuck ! Ive spoken to some exhaust shops and they said I have two options.

1. reuse the current muffler, build custom pipes and add tips ($250 labor + tips)

2. order a magna flow muffler, build custom pipes and add tips ($250 labor, +100 muffler + tips)

now ive searched around a lot and looked at a few conversion threads but I still cant figure out which way to go with my exhaust.

are these my only two options or is there something I havent thought of yet?

also my car is an e92 328i 2011 LCI in Vermilion Metallic Red, getting the performance diffuser painted to match! any suggestions on tip colors? I like the cyba tips in black chrome, dry carbon and brushed aluminum

Progress update

The new rear end is ready, its lookin pretty good! just need to get the exhaust work done

Ive narrowed it down to either black chrome or black carbon tips and the magnaflow muffler (its wayyy to loud with the muffler delete) as of now the muffler is cut off to not melt the bumper

I shall do so, If anyone else has any information on this or opinions on which tips or stock vs magnaflow sound that would be appreciated too!

also does anyone know where to get the Carbon fiber insert for the performance diffuser?

I'm doing the conversion later this year and plan to just remove the muffler and use custom piping to route dual tips. If its too loud I can always add a muffler down the road.

You thought of doing a muffler delete?

I have not considered this option ! definitely something il look into. My only concern is one you already pointed out, it might be too loud.

Anyone know if its possible to purchase just the muffler from the performance exhaust?

It can be done with the magnaflow muffler that's how I did mine. As far as the tips they will prob have to be cut in half unless you want them sticking out from the diffuser.t I have a sedan not sure if it matters

Ive done the conversion with a magnaflow as well, with short magnaglow tips. The e90 has a storage compartment in the trunk that doesnt leave much room for long tips, but I dont think the coupes have that issue.

I see the e90 guys chiming in but OP has an e92. I ended up doing this on my coupe and you basically have a few options like you posted.. but need a good welder and exhaust guy. May need to relocate some things undercarriage, storage bin etc.

I ended up going with quads and a custom diffuser but your setup should be somewhat of the same - heres one of the older pics floating around - i'll be adding more detailed pics and a sound clip soon

So I guess this conversion isn't possible with a BMW PE?

There is not much room to do with it with the stock muffler or PE because you would have to reroute BOTH exhaust outlets on the muffler. Not only will space be an issue but it will be super restrictive.

Just go with the Magnaflow muffler if you want a more subdued sound. If you want noise then just go without a muffler.

It doesn't matter E90 or E92. The idea and what you have to do to accomplish it is exactly the same.

The new diffuser is looking great!

I'd go with the 3.8 black tips, skip the CF on a 328. It may be too loud right now but I feel like even if you left the muffler delete and just added the piping + tips, that extra few feet of piping will bring down the volume a bit.

Keep us posted with what you do

not really their is a bit more room on the sedan than the coupe near the storage compartment and vapor canister hoses is different on the coupe

The coupe is longer so the coupe actually has more room.

Not in my price range, i have $500 left from insurance unless someone has a used 328i PE for sale !

my shop told me they can fit either muffler down there. I definitely can't live with the amount of noise coming out now its wayyy to loud for my taste. Will the magnaflow be significantly quieter than the current setup?

I think either 3.8 or 4.0 black chrome tips are in my future. They really look the same but everyone seems to have used the 4.0 with good results and I dont wana look back a year later and say hmmm they look a hair small for the opening lol.

this is such a typical 335 owner response lol.
This whole mod is purely aesthetic and a debadge would be for aesthetics also. I am not claiming to have a 335, and if anyone asks what I drive, I would say a 328i but the fact is the back of the trunk just looks better without a badge.

Plus im not tracking or racing it, again this is purely because it looks nicer than the stock bumper setup and I got it done for free.

Now as for CF vs chrome....heres my idea

Option 1.
CF insert for the bottom of the diffuser, CF performance spoiler, CF tips, and then il get some twill CF and resin to do the top black parts in real CF?

Option 2
Black chrome tips, and a paint matched spoiler

any thoughts as to what would look nicer?

it can probably be done, they would just have to mount the PE further towards the front and cut the tips off to weld on the piping.
