Seeing as how the body style and engine are both being retired, they could of made some truly collectible cars by offering a "true" special edition M3 that either (or all combined) had a moderate weight reduction, different engine tune (I'm willing to give up the battle for the 4.4L engine since BMW just will not give us their "sweet" engines...), and exhaust. If you knock off the Fire Orange color (say you go with blue...), put an engine tune that bumps it up to say 430- 440 HP and charge that same mark-up that the paint would get those cars would not even sit in the showroom...

All of those things could be done rather easily without having to modify the assembly line or other cost adding measures. But instead, they go and toss all that effort at the 1M, and just decide to add more options that few people bought (either due to their already high mark-up or better aftermarket offerings) to the M3 as its swan song...

BUT I haven't completely lost faith in BMW yet. If you have been following ALMS BMW has claimed their 2x championship winning M3's are "all maxed out" on the rule books. Basically they can't go faster in that chassis while the other teams are "allowed" to make changes to better their developments.
Their alternative? Use the Z4 GT3 and convert it to ALMS specs with the 4.4 liter. The only problem? There has to be a production version. This would be really awesome

Travesty is a little strong. It's overpriced for what it is. The best thing about the car was Fire Orange. Never seen that in person before. It's a great color.

I've never seen a new M at BH. I get bored in their showroom when I wait for my car so I usually check out the Porsches next door. Peake has had at least 1 M every time I've been there.

It's funny that you say that bc last time I walked through there, there was a 2011.75 E92 M3 in Imola red. It was fully loaded with every optino and comp package. It even had red stitching in the black leather. I love imola, such a beautiful color. Also, sitting next to that was a new drop top 650i full m-sport package, beautiful car with a 114k sticker price.

Nice. Imola is awesome. I used to have a hellrot E36 M3. Hellrot was good but Imola is better.

They probably do, but their customer service still sucks. I had planned to rebuild my VANOS units today, but notice that one of the gaskets I ordered online was bent. No big deal. I'll head over to Peake and pick up a new one for $5.00. Except their parts department is closed all day today for inventory. WTF And their staff gave me attitude. Every time i go in there I am reminded why I always do whatever I can to avoid them.

Right back at ya. I got to drive Jeff's e34 M5, this weekend, and it reinvigorated my love for the inline six. Especially when I turned the cutoff valve.
