Katana from Sprint works great!
I just wanted to confirm that the Katana from Sprint works 100%, phone book, etc. I had no problems pairing it with the car, it took me 2 minutes without having to read any manuals or anything, very easy!! And so far everytime I get in the car it syncs right up within seconds, very cool stuff...

How long has it been since you sync'd it? My Samsung A900 lost the connection after about a day.
So everything works fine? Phone book, recent call log, etc??

It's only possible to know if the phone works after a few weeks.
Trust me. I'm testing about 20 phones right now; constant surprises.

I'm using a Samsung A640 (Sprint) with a new E90 (non idrive) and although the phone book loads, only one phone number loads per entry.

I went to the BMW dealer yesterday to find out what Sprint phones would be supported by a snap in adapter with a docking cradle. I thought I might want the cradle and adapter. This would supposedly give a stronger signal connecting through the car's antenna, and provide power to charge the battery. It also would be a dedicated place to put the phone. I read somewhere (I thought it was the owners manual) that BMW warns against using bluetooth without a cradle. The idea was that without one, the radio frequencies of the phone could interfere with the car electronics.
The dealer referred to the bmwusa.com web site which lists only the treo 650 with Sprint. I had already looked at this information. This is an old phone. I don't want an old phone to replace my old non-bluetooth phone. I want a new one. They referred me to Auto Wireless Solutions for BMW Certified Bluetooth phones. wireless4BMW.com 877-269-9500. I spoke with a rep who referred to the treo 650. He warned that any other bluetooth phone that is not certified might cause problems with the car's electronics and might even cause the airbags to deploy! (It sounded like to me.) He explained that they didn't have any real cases of this happening, but it is a warning. I explained that I don't have iDrive or Nav if that makes a difference. Then he backed off some from his warnings. He also explained that even if a non-certified phone would work now, it could stop working whenever the car software is updated. Are they just being exceedingly cautious? I think BMW needs to certify more phones with Sprint, and probably coordinate with them so that when Sprint updates their phone firmware that it maintains compatibility with BMW cars, since the carrier's custom firmware is so critical in compatibility. I guess getting a cradle and snap-in adapter with a Motorola V3m is no good since Sprint firmware may not get along from what I have seen in some posts. I will probably go with the Katana since I like the looks of the phone, and I have been pretty happy with my old Sanyo 8200 phone. And most importantly, more people have said the Katana has worked flawlessly with their BMWs. |

Earlier in this thread I made a comment about the Samsung A640 (Sprint)-- that's my wife's phone and I was experimenting with it. Since it was not completely compatible, I decided to try a Samsung M500-- I've been using this for about 5 weeks and it's been great. I have no compatibility issues with it.

It seems that when I try to make the call from the phone book in the iDrive, the sound is not routed through the car speakers. If I hang up and dial the same number again, than the sound will come through the speakers. |

I just got the new Samsung m500 from Sprint and it works excellently.
However, I don't like the phone and I'm trading it in for the M1...hopefully that phone works just as well. |

Just got my Sanyo Katana from Sprint. It was no trouble pairing it up and transferring the phone book. I haven't worked with it much yet to see what all the features are (of the phone or of the bluetooth interface on my Logic 7 stereo). So far so good.

The Katana seems to work pretty well. There are some things I haven't figured out. Or they just don't work. I can't view missed calls. I haven't seen anything in the way of a message waiting indicator. I don't see how to use speed dial. Any insights?

I have figured out why I couldn't display missed calls. It seems the Logic 7 will only display missed calls that were missed while the bluetooth connection was active.
It looks like the message waiting indicator is an icon that lights up between the telephone symbol and the signal strength indicator. Like the missed calls, it seemed to work only when a message was received while the bluetooth was active between the car and the Katana. I still didn't find out how to speed dial. There was a significant error in the Owner's Manual for full preparation package mobile phone. It was on page 16, Voice phone book, Storing an entry. Item 1 should read >Save name<.I discovered this after many frustrating minutes trying to use >Store name< and >Store number<. The voice recognition system seemed to just not understand what I was telling it to do. So I started throwing different words at it. With the voice phonebook working, I guess that not being able to use speed dialing will not hurt as much. |
