Non-RFT Tyres - 19" - current prices update

Hi,

My rear 19" 255/30 tyres are now worn on the inside edge to the point where I need to consider replacement. The rear centres are down to 4mm now anyway, while the fronts still have 6mm in the centre.

Having being quoted £750 for 2 new rear RFT Bridgestones by a main dealer today I'm looking at non-Run Flat options:

So far (these are for 19" 225M BMW OEM rims with 225/35/19 front and 255/30/19 rear tyres):

falken-tyres direct - £450 for set of 4 FK-452s delivered inc VAT, with 265/30 rears instead of 255/30

mytyres - £650 for all 4 in OEM sizes delivered inc VAT - Goodyear EAGLE F1 Assym
mytyres - £658 for all 4 in OEM sizes delivered inc VAT - Vredestein Sessantas

I guess I need to add around £50 to these prices for fitting - will probably use my village garage.

I've emailed Micheldever for a quote too.

Any thoughts / recommendations? What are my front RE050 RFTs typically worth 2nd hand with 6mm tread - as they are £250+ new each, they are still worth a bit?

The fronts should be 225/35/19.

I'm running Falken 452's, 235/35 19" on the front and 265/30 19" rears, to be honest it's done nothing but rain and snow since I put them on so can't comment on their dry performance.

I was previously running 18" wheels and RFT's, as far as ride quality goes it's certanily now worse that the 18" RFT set up, better if anything doesn't crash around so much. I think they have sofer side walls than other makes, Im runing mine at 40 posi in the fronts and 42 in the rears. As a middle of the road tyre I reckon they pretty good and would buy them again.

Thanks for replies - what do you think of the prices?

Carlos - how much do you pay for your favourite Conti non-RFTs

EDIT

- looks like Camskill is £770 for Conti SC3s but with 235/35 fronts, 255/30 rears.

- Just found that Camskill are about £10 cheaper (£440 delivered) for the Falkens.

- Camskill £620 for the Sessantas delivered!

I'm thinking Sessantas are probably worth the £170 extra over the Falken FK452s? SC3 are alot more again.

£450 is what I paid for the Falkens, so its the same as you've been quoted.

I did have Sessantas on my previous car (E91 320d), performance wise, they were good however they didn't last very long.

Try event-tyres (they were the cheapest online place I found for my Falken 912s) and see if you can find a local Falken dealer (via Falken's website) as they were able to supply tyres even cheaper, which utimately came from Micheldever.

I just had four new 19" Conti Sport Contact 3 fitted for £780. As a side issue, I was chatting a Vehicle Inspectorate (VOSA) this week who examines hundreds if not thousands of vehicles a year. He reckons Toyo's are amongst the best all round tyre for overall performace & wear. He also stated that these sorts of tyres are specifically designed to wear on the inner edge. I'm not sure if he is talking bull**** but I would have thought this guy is fairly clued up.

Excause the hijack but looking to replace my rears now as needed quite badly.

Camskill are out of 255's as on back order, does anyone know please if you can fit 265's to the rear of a 335i, I have 18" wheels.

Thanks

Same here but for £40 more.
Struggled to find the rear size Conti tho' but sorted after a couple of days.

Rear Conti doesn't have as much rim protection as the Bridgestones but so far that is the only downer. Just have to be careful.

Much better ride especially over poor surfaces so very happy

I need one 275/35 19 and was thinking of either buying a used Bridgestone rft to match the other side or to replace the back 2 with non rft Falkens.

Thoughts?

Update:

I went for Falkens in the end. Just taken them off after around 8000 miles use and put my winters on - happily the wear on the 19" Falken tread is

a) minimal, but more importantly
b) even across the tread

Early days, but it seems these wear better than 19" RFTs on the rear.

Pic attached (middle 2 tyres are the rears - rubbish photo as I must have moved the iphone as it was being taken.....):

I have 2 x bridgestone RFT tyres with around 5mm tread on them £180 if anyone wants can arrange courrier.

On a side not conti tyres i tend to find are the best all round tyres and auto express tests seem to back this up... worth shelling out for decent tyres as they are the only point of contact between you and the road!!

The original post was from March 2010 - at the time I had 19" Bridgestone RFTs all round. The wear on the inner rears was down to canvas in the end - but still with lots of tread in the middle and outer. The fronts were OK though.

I replaced them with 19" Falken 452s - which are seen (all 4, with the wider rears the 2 tyres in the middle) in the photo.

The car is now on 17" Falken winter tyres.
