No speed camera realtime system is technically legal, you can have it in the car but not plugged in/switched on.

The only one that will give you a meaningful amount of warning is a 'Valentine One' i think they are bringing out a new one, they are american but the only one that is of any use for mobile speed camera units and will allow you dodge one if you slam on the brakes.

Honestly I've looked and my friend had one and speak from experience, they are however around £350-400 and you need the one with both front and back sensors.

I've used the Valentine 1 and the Escort Passport 8500/9500 series detectors. From my experience, Escort detectors are much less annoying. The 9500 is better than the 8500 for the GPS (warns for camera intersections/bogus signals), but the 8500 is great nonetheless. The Valentine was equally effective in picking up signals, however the display and sounds were less user-friendly in my opinion. To mute a sound with the Valentine, you have to press the knob that controls volume making it easy for you to change the volume in the process, unlike the Escort which takes the press of a button. Also, customer service at Escort is great, they sent me new mounts, wiring, and a case when I sent in my detector for a "tune" as they call it. Hope this helps

Interesting, I haven't had a speed camera detector for a while so do you rate the 9500 more than the valentine 1?

I take it the 9500 has Gps based detection and realtime and can do everything the valentine 1 can do?

Cheers

Exactly. I think the 9500 is great, but does the same thing as the 8500ci when you disable the X and K band (provided you don't need to protect yourself from those frequencies). I would save yourself the money and get the 8500ci, which is comparable/slightly better than V1.

All sounds very expensive...you could just drive with some self control when on unknown roads and stay within the speed limit

The US models use radar detectors which are pretty much useless in the UK we use laser speed guns (and pelican crossings and shop door openers etc will set them off). Only rear facing cameras here use radar, so its too late when you've already passed it! Laser detectors are also pretty much useless as they will only detect a laser when the gun is being fired on your car, by then it's too late if you are speeding.

A GPS based system will work best, but it doesn't "detect" cameras or mobile locations, it just knows where they are (or might be).

Either use your phone and the PGPSW database (best option these days) http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/module...ums&file=index

Or if you want a dedicated hardware unit the one of the best UK models is the Cheetah C50, only £119 with lifetime database updates.

It's a very long time since I have been involved with radar detectors but they used to work with rear-facing cameras because the radar reflected off vehicles in front and so was detectable by you. Is this no longer the case?

Maybe, provided there is a car infront of you that is.

And if they are infront of you they'll get flashed first

I just installed the escort 9500ci with the BMW addition Laser Interceptor. Not only does the Escort have a very long range but the Laser Interceptors will block any radar being shot at you. This has saved my license many many many times! If the cop cant get a reading on your car, he has no way to prove you were speeding! I believe now that Escort has partner up with laser interceptor, so the lasers you receive when purchasing the 9500ci have the laser jammer built in. My system cost around $3,000 but I had my display custom fabricated to sit on top on my rearview for a sleek clean look. Let me know if you have any questions or want to see some pictures of it installed on my 2013 335i

Surprised no one has suggested pogo alert v2 or snooper 3 zero, they seem to get a good rep, perfectly legal, tells u about all active gatso's, warns u of mobile camera hotspots, detects laser spills, costs are reasonable too?

I've used a Bell laser / radar detector for the last ten years.
It's real time, so will tell you if a GATSO is live or not. Detects laser well.
Have to remember it doesn't detect SPECS which are often used at roadworks.
But as I don't speed in roadworks its not a problem.

Nothing replaces vigilance though!

But once you've detected laser, it's too late......isn't it?

No 1 AKY.

The ACPO guidelines recommends that you lock onto the target with the laser for at least three seconds before taking a reading.

Thus giving you time to modify your speed.
