Would a 335 driver be satisfied with a BMW SUV?
So eventually down the road I will be looking to trade my 335 in for a BMW SUV. I currently have cobb stage one, and the alpina flash on my car. This makes for a very fast, and fun to drive car reminiscent of a mini M car.
Having said that, if in the future I get an SUV it may be an x3 35i. How far performance wise, stock for stock, will this be than my 335? I briefly drove one, and it felt okay but not as taut and had more body roll. Second question, would a stock X5M match or perhaps surpass the excitement of my tuned 335? They are depreciating fast, so they are starting to look more attainable. |

We have an X5 not the M but from what i have experienced, you are very high on the road, and handling is really really smooth. almost like toyota camry smooth. The steering is effortless and will take away that stiff feeling that we'll feel in a 3 series. The X3 which i had as a loaner before, was just... so boring.... I would like to try the X5M and feel the differences one day. And.. just another thought.. going from 335i to a X5M is a lot more $$$(but you mention it is depreciating fast).. in gas money too...
X3 - i see that it is more of a young mom's kinda car who needs ample space and likes good clearance and SUV styled body. no offense to young moms of course. But i dont see too many guys jumping on the X3's from a 335i.. UNLESS it's more of a utilitarian use car. does that help? cheers!

My wife (a "car person" to her core) went from an e90 335 to an X1 with the N55. She seems quite happy so far, and I'm pretty impressed with the X1 too.
That being said, the X1 almost doesn't count as an SUV. Lifted 3 series wagon, maybe? We also had a brief stint with an X3si that had the N52 (or whatever the naturally aspirated 3.0 is?) and it didn't last long in the family. Definitely not a fan. Handled pretty decently, but the power was just lousy. |

Yep, I heard the X1 is more like a driver's car. I may test drive one in the future for the wife, its just too small. I cant imagine a 335i driver being satisfied with an X3 or X5. I think you would have to go with a Cayenne S or Turbo or an X6. That being said, I know my wife will be driving an X3 or X5 for her next car.

if you're looking for a more practical car that's also fun to drive, find a cpo e91. won't be as fast but it'll still handle well.

All I know is the X3 and X5 are TERRIBLE if you care about the driving experience. Extremely vague/light steering, until recently weak motors, unreliable (in the early X3's case, outright poor quality), bouncy on the highway. They're no different dynamically than an RX350, which leads the class overall IMO, but is extremely dull. I suppose it's nothing against the car, the market is what it is. But i've been underwhelmed by them.

I would stay away from an X3. I had it as a loaner car and to be honest it felt too much like a regular car. I haven't driven an X5, but it's probably safe to assume it has more of an SUV feel and more power.

If I was going to buy an SUV, I'd do it right and buy a Range Rover... likely the sport supercharged.
if they sold new discoveries here, I'd buy one of those

I had an X5 xDrive35i for a loaner. It wasn't bad. The steering was better than expected and actually had better feedback than the loaner X1 I had used before. The car is definitely big though compared to a 3-series and it does feel more isolated and slower because of it, though the N55 did a fine job motivating it.
As for whether a BMW SUV could satisfy a 335 driver, well, that depends on what they like the 335 for. If it's the straight line speed, the most powerful X1/X3/X5/X6 would be your best bet. If handling is important, I'd say none of the SUVs would satisfy that requirement though the X1 actually feels quite good for an SUV.

Keep in mind the X5 weighs about 1500 lbs more than your 335. You're going to feel that no matter what motor you have in it.
I will say though that the X5M motor makes some great noises. Almost defies physics...but it still weighs 2.5 tons. You'll be hard pressed to find any SUV that can come even close to feeling like one of the best all around sport sedans in the world.

I think its more spacious and comfortable then a 3-series e9X. Trust me, it looks small from outside but once you are inside, it seems much bigger. Feels solid, steering feel is good and its not that high. In my opinion X1 looks sturdier than X3. |

Thanks for the ideas guys - you raise some good points. I was hoping an X3 with the 35i engine and sport package would give it a good drivers car feel - but to be honest I'm really enamored with the X5M. I drove a couple in the past, and although it does feel big, it definitely is a driver's car.
Too bad the MPG is so poor, but then again that's what you get with that class of car built when it was. |

I had the x5 35i and it is big heavy and pretty tall, nice car but needed the twin turbo v8 to be fun. Just got a 2014 msport x3 35i and it is much more fun, lighter, lower and much sportier. I have a jb plus in it and with the 8 speed trans it will hang with a 335i

If you're coming from a tuned 335i, you'll only be satisfied with an X5M (X6M is a joke as far as the exterior goes). I still don't trust Range Rover's reliability, Merc AMG SUVs are ok and so are the Porsche Cayenne Turbos but man those options ridiculous.

I'm a college student and my summer job this summer has been working at a car wash. (Don't worry my car never goes through the scratch-o-magic) However, the area where the car wash is has mainly soccer moms so I have driven every SUV known to man in the past 2 months. (I use the term driven loosely as I really only drive them about 50 yards to the other side of the wash to be dried off) So I cant really attest to the handling capabilities of the cars but I do know the interior of every car very well. If I had to buy an SUV I would definitely get a Range Rover because they have the nicest interiors by far. The new Cayennes are also very nice on the inside. My second choice would have to be an X5M though, because the interiors are nice and because they are the best looking on the exterior imo, especially with the rear tires that are the size of a smart car.

I currently have a loaded M sport 335 with a tune/intake on the way and my best friend has an X5 M and driving the X5 when we went camping was a blast. It handles amazingly well and is fun to drive! Of course, it's not a coupe/sedan but they are definitely a sportier SUV than many others.

Honestly, I think SUV's are automotive failure. Most of them are just lifted wagons now anyways. If someone put a gun to my head and made me drive an SUV for the next few years, I'd go with the Jeep SRT8.
