Errr. No thanks
The 17 year old son just passed his test so thought I would have a look at insurance for a laugh on a 1 litre polo worth 800 quid. Cheapest I got online was 10 grand. Even me insuring it and adding him was 4 odd grand.
TAXI.

It's bad enough when they are learning, but when they've passed thier test it is truly frightening.
You need to use all the "catches" you can. Insure the car in his name, with you and the good lady as named drivers. Don't put down less than 3 or 4000 miles per year. Then just bite the bullet!. Mike |

I passed when I was 17 and couldn't afford insurance until I waswas 21 and it dropped below the grand mark, just 4 years of buses and taxis lol. Now 23 and a 320D is still around 800 quid fully comp!
As Mike said, just mess round and get a few quotes with different details to see what gets it lower. Putting my mum on as a named driver (woman in her 50s with 9+ ncb) pretty much halves my quote! Other things like saying it was parked on the road over night rather than on the drive took £50 or so off (i thought it'd be the other way!?). Basically mess round in a price comparison site and see what gets it low. |

Only 2 other cars insured at the minute Mike. Other half just sorned the mr2 turbo and my escort hasn't seen insurance in a few years. Will give Quinn's a try Danny. The advantages of being old chaps.

Have a look at vans. Sounds daft but it worked for someone I know and their car mad 17 yo son. I don't mean a Transit but something like the car derived small vans. Fair enough he'll only be able to give a lift to one mate but the selling point is there's more room for the inevitable subs

As daft as it also may sound, actually try looking at newer cars.
My apprentice at work paid £4k to insure his old K reg Polo (worth£400). Messing around with different (and newer) cars actually brought the price down. Maybe cos they are safer? I don't know but worth a shot! |

What about Citroen/Peugeot/Renault new car deals which include insurance?
"Just add fuel" or whatever it's called...

3 years ago, trying to insure an Astra Diesel van for the 18 year old was a no-go. Horrendously priced. Pity, because he'd been offered a good deal on one of his firm's van's.
Newer cars have less accidents because people look after them more. In theory. Mike |

Well have looked at nearly all the options available and it's not gonna fly. His age and lack of driving experience all go against him but I ain't paying £2800 for him on my 71 year old fathers policy even if we sold his present 98 1400 golf and put him in a 1.0 polo. The joys of being young.

Can you add him as a temporary driver monthly. some policies only let you do that for a couple of months but others let it go longer. A guy I work with is doing this for his son, had been getting quotes similar to yours but is doing this other route at £80/month.

Isn't insurance in Northern Ireland insanely expensive regardless of age due to claims culture?
I worked in Belfast for 3 months a few years ago. Took my car over and as I was there for a while thought I should tell insurance. Initially they refused to insure it at all (which wa a problem as already there...) Eventually agreed to do it, but wanted about £500 extra for the 3 months. (annual premium was only about that for living in Glasgow) car was a 1.8l civic. |

Insurance over here can be expensive but more to do with not as many companies covering NI. The claims culture is pretty much UK wide so can't see that being a factor.
Having said that my insurance is buttons for a 35d X5 and 335d both at under £300 so I can't complain. |

You must be really old Davy and keep your car in psni headquarters. I'm paying 470 I think in that hotspot that is BT13.

BT13 is your problem Brian, may be cheaper to move
I'm only paying £308 with Direct Line for BT22. Obviously some UK insurance companies did do Geography at school but it's surprising how many think Northern Ireland isn't in the UK...! |
