Oil recommendation

Hello All,

I need to change my oil soon, and I have called several auto shops to inquire about the oil they offer, and I got Fuch's 5W-40, Mobil 5W-30 and 0W-40 ($140?!!), Royal Purple (like to try it), and Total 0W-30 (Bimmex has a promotion for first time customers for $43, regular price is $87)

BMW does it for $135.

My car is out of warranty, so should I stick to OEM BMW oil, or do you guys recommend something else? (I dont want DIY suggestions)

Thanks for your input, will keep that in mind.

Mobil 0W-40 is LL-01 approved but other Mobil oils sold on North America are NOT LL-01 approved and not suitable for your BMW engine. Since you have absolutley no means to know how any oil performs in your engine, it's wise to stick with BMW approved LL-01 (not LL-04 as this is only for low sulfur fuels), oils that have actually been tested and confirmed to provide the proper lubrication.

There is a lot of false information posted online by enthusiasts. None of these people have any objective, scientific technical lubrication test data to support their beliefs as proper testing cost tens of thousands of dollars and is usually performed by car makers and few others. None of the boutique oil purveyors has ever presented any Euro car maker oil sequence test data to support their ad hype that their oil is suitable for use in any BMW or other Euro engine.

Don't be duped by advertising hype and baseless claims. There are plenty of threads on oil if you want to read a bunch of technical nonsense and fanboism. Just use the SEARCH feature. The boutique oil fanbois will be along shortly to tell you how great their flavor of the week oil is.

My car is fairly new and only has dealer changes. In the next month or so I'll be taking it to Rocco. I'm not sure what your concern is? Unless you're tracking your car I highly doubt you'll notice any difference. If it's such a big concern to you then get Motul 300V. Can't go wrong with that. Just be prepared to pay. Just my opinion.

Some of what you are saying is false. BMW approved? WTF is that? LL oil means Long Life. If you are changing your oil more than the recommended BMW way then it makes no difference. Most of us here are changing our oil a lot more often so who gives a rats ass about LL. Motul 300V is fine for every day use if you're going to change it more often than the LL oils.

LL-01 means it was tested and certified to meet BMW specs. Not having an LL-01 doesn't mean it doesn't meet specs, its just never been tested to determine if it meets BMW spec.

If it worries you, buy your own oil (oil that is LL-01 certified) and take it to wherever you have your car serviced and have them use your oil. If you don't trust them to use it, you're going to the wrong shop.

LL does mean long life but the LL-01 can only be indicated on the bottle if it has been certified to meet BMW's specs for infrequent oil change intervals.

You are right that if someone is changing their oil more frequently and are either out of warranty or not concerned about a dealer using the excuse of improper engine in order to avoid a warranty claim, they shouldn't worry about LL-01.

If you're in the GTA you can get a good deal on BMW oil from Mike at Maranello BMW and use that oil to do more frequent oil changes.

Yes, I called Mike and I think I will stick to BMW oil
I am waiting for Blackstone to deliver the kit so I take a sample of the existing oil and send it for analysis.

Thanks all for your input

THIS is why you don't trust everything you read here. Why would anyone EVER change from what is recommended by the manufacturer when it comes to oil? Makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. As mentioned on another thread recently, you cannot detect a change in engine performance when using different oils.

oil

my 06 323i needs an oil change which i have no problem doing, the manual says 5w-30 or 10w 30 synthetic.. the car has had brian jezzel oil changes since day one and they use only bmw oil. my question is can i use castrol sytec 10w-30 as stated on the oil lid of the car? nowhere does the manual state any brand or other statements like LL1;LL4; LL Cool J. ect for type of oil. just that it has to be 5w30 or 10w30 synthetic.
