New Requirement for Exporting US vehicles?
So I've personally imported 4 US vehicles over the years with the last one being in 2013. However, a co-worker just told me about this new requirement for personal export …..
http://www.riv.ca/USCustoms.aspx A decent article spelling out the details can be read here: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...258064351.html It makes buying a private sale almost impossible as most US private sellers will not “take the time to apply to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and some private sellers don't want to do that” …. I think it makes it more difficult to import your own car as I’m not sure a private individual will have access to the AES system? More info on the AES system http://www.cbp.gov/trade/trade-commu...ated/aes/about Thoughts?

With the C$ currently in the low 0.90's I'm sure the importing has declined but with soo much more selection south of the border this extra step my deter importing? Not to mention a win for Canadian auto retailers

Does it mean you can still import through a US dealer?

Looks like a minor setback. Don't think dealers will have a problem doing this, they might be doing this already.
I think it'll only affect those individuals that do not have a Federal Tax Identification number i.e. haven't filed their tax returns, if they do have it I don't see why a seller would be too hesitant in filling something like this especially if they want to sell their car. This step might screen out phony private sellers for us Canadian buyers. |

I just called to get more clarification on the Automated Export System (AES) and the gentlemen told me that as of October 2nd, 2014 the 180 days of "informed compliance" is over. Any car being exported needs to be documented via Electronic Export Information (EEI) into the AES system. He told me that a Canadian does NOT have access to the AES system and it needs to be filled out by an American. I asked who in the US has access to the AES system and he told me that he "couldn't reference any specific companies" but "anyone who does international exporting" should have access and they'll be able (for a fee) to get the info via EEI into AES.
So basically he's saying you need to find a company and pay them ..... I'm sure as this becomes more relevant, there will be a handful of trust worthy exporters willing to do this "electronic paperwork" for a reasonable price??
