gauging interest: gated shifter

anyone interesting in an aluminum gated shifter replacement for the e9x? If there is some interest i will do some R&D and order the aluminum stock and get to machining. I dont know a price point since its never been done, but the aluminum itself for this is around $50 plus machining time

Interesting! I've just been looking at the Audi R8 and older Ferrari interiors and the gated shift really lifts the interior.

you only see them in exotics, i love hearing the metal on metal clicking shifts and some real machined aluminum can make the interior look much more aggressive

It'd need a new shiny stalk and gear knob too!

I think this could be a really unique alternative, but I'd worry that you may bite off more than you can chew, depending on how much research you put into it.

One thing to bear in mind...While replacing the boot with machined gates is one thing, our exposed shifter stalk isn't exactly pretty, as it was never meant to be put on display, not is it probably as thin as it needs to be for cleanly machined gates. You might need to consider a shifter stalk that not only has the right diameter, but one that looks the part too.

Good luck!

As someone who has driven cars with a gated shifter, I'm here to tell you that the novelty wears off in about 3 shifts.

1. The contact "click" is terribly annoying.
2. You have to navigate the gate, so you end up shifting slower
3. You miss shifts (contrary to what you would think) because the shifter rides the gate which causes you to accidentally go 4-3 instead of 4-5, or 5-6 instead of 5-4.

Don't think it will work. A stalk that thin made out of aluminum will not be strong enough. Manufacturing out of stainless steel will be cost prohibitive.

Haven driven a r8 v10 and a 360/430 Modena with gated shifters, I highly disagree
And by the way......who gave the OP this idea?
