Official N52 Exhaust Media Thread

For n52 owners who have anything but stock exhaust, whether it’s a mild home DIY PE mod to custom 3” with side exit. Only requirement is you post a good quality video along with a detailed configuration.

Pics of underside are optional but video clip is a must!

I’ll kick it off.

Supersprint headers
Burns merger (3” piping all the way back)
Vibrant 1794
Flowmaster Delta 40
6” oval tip

(Loud as f*ck)

Since then I’ve changed things up to quiet it down. Here’s how it sounds, no drone. Really pleasant to drive while still maintaining aggressive tone at speeds.

100 cell hfc
Maganflow resonator
Flowmaster Hushpower muffler
Dual 3.5” tips

Really loving the exhaust sound. Drive to/from home is drone free but it comes alive under WOT. Clip from NASA season opener at Lime Rock today.

The condenser mic in my S8 does a good job of capturing the sound of the car.

BMW PI / Charcoal Delete / Turner Boot / 3IM / BMW PE / BimmerGeeks 330i tune

I would like to add that there is *some* drone in low RPM at heavy load now, probably as the muffler has broken in a lot over the last 10 months.

  • stock headers and stock secondary cats
  • resonator removed
  • Magnaflow 13266 muffler in place of stock muffler
  • unbranded, staggered dual exhaust tips

Here's a clip of some revs, WOT pulls, and a little drive-by. Phone speakers totally miss out on the bassy low end sound of this setup though, FYI. [/i]

Resonator doesn't change volume, it effects resonate frequencies (Rasp)

Ordering parts for my exhaust today I guess.

Yeah, I just found it odd how it affected the 128i so differently. Maybe the piping is different, who knows...

I might have to add the resonator back in to reduce drone/potential rasp once I get headers.

I ordered

Borla XS Pro 3inch in/out offset (76.2mm)
Vibrant ultra quiet resonator 3inch (76.2mm)
Vibrant Y pipe 2.25"in/3 "out (57.15mm/76.2mm)

I'm considering Magnaflow Highflow cat, but we'll see.

Correct. Resonators also help to "resonate" your exhaust flow which is a good type of turbulence and it also tunes your exhaust note to how the engineers thought the car should sound like from the factory. the stock resonator on these cars emits a GREAT sound if you have a high-flow exhaust.

all vehicles equipped with the N52 have the same exhaust system.

Cool thread. The stickied version is so out-dated. I'll try to get some good video footage of my PE before and after secondary delete.

the PE needs resonators in place of the secondaries to sound good, imo.

so what are the differences then? i've looked under a 128i, 328i, 528i with n52 and all had the exact same layout except for the overall piping length.

I am very interested to hear those clips, especially after the secondaries are gone. (I think my videos of the PE are pretty high-quality ehehehe)

Lets keep this topic on thread instead of turning it into a never ending debate on something useless that results in the same person getting banned repetitively. Banning is fine but let’s not turn this into another garbage thread.

Looks like he's banned again. Back to exhaust videos. Who's got some more with headers??

At the risk of overexposure (this video has been posted before), I'll contribute here in the spirit that this thread may be helpful to people doing research in the future.

Configuration:

- 330i 3IM DISA intake manifold
- Aux 2.5" CAI
- AA N52 headers with ceramic coating thermal barrier
- SS test pipes
- Dundon Motorsports 3" 20 gauge 321 stainless alloy / Inconel exhaust with Vibrant 1142 resonator and Coast Fabrication lightweight muffler

My experience:

The Good - the sound and flow. One of the most frequent comments from people about this car was the sound of the exhaust. It sounds wonderful, and opens up into a shriek > 4k RPM. The car burbles and pops in a subtle, non-obnoxious manner, not loudly.

The Bad - loudness at cold-start. The exhaust pulses are quite powerful at cold start. I can physically feel the pressure pulses when the car's in the garage. I think my neighbor could, too. This recedes after 90 sec or so, after the cat pre-heat function is complete. This may be less of an issue now since tuners are offering cat pre-heat delete as an option. Naturally this only applies to a fully de-catted exhaust.

The Ugly - rasp between 2 - 3k RPM. It's not very bad, but it's present and audible. Only the end-user can determine if it's too much, depending on personal experience and circumstances

Misc - this video was taken from my last car, a '11 E91 6AT. The exhaust was moved to my current car, another '11 E91 with 6MT and RWD. The main difference between then and now is that the current car still has the stock exhaust manifold. On the current car, the sound is quieter without being quiet, and to my ears is dead-on perfect. There's no rasp with the stock manifold.
This exhaust was designed for scavenging and flow, NOT sound, but it sounds musical to my ears and to others.

My current car is in the fabricator's shop for service to install new SuperSprint cat-less headers and dyno. I requested the designer adjust the resonator and muffler to quiet the system appropriately for the street.

I like it tetsuo111. It's always hard to tell from videos but sounds like it has a good sound quality and not raspy in a bad way. Plus the craftsmanship looks excellent.
