Engine Belt Broke - BMW Cost to repair
Hi All,
My engine belt broke yesterday and my local BMW dealership told me its because the oil filter leaked on to the belt and dried it out. Then the broken belt got into the fan and messed it up. Do these prices look normal to anyone with a similar experience, all costs include labor and parts in Canadian dollars. 1) Replace Oil Filter Housing - $869 2) Replace Drive Belt - $190.50 3) Replace Aux Fan - $1068 Thanks, Nick |

You are fortunate the debris didn't get sucked into the crank seal. I have seen whole engine replacement because of that. On this engine, it is absolutely crucial to check for OFHG leaks. The leak itself is harmless but it can lead to devastating failures.
Find an indi to do it for you if you cannot DIY. OFHG should be around US$400 out the door. |

My oil filter housing had a leak as well, but thankfully it was only due to a broken seal in the black cap on the oil filter housing. Oil leaked onto my belt just like it did in yours but fortunately I took it into my local shop and they replaced the belt as a precaution. They charged me around $160 for that, $55 for the belt, and $90 for one hour of labor. Hopefully my oil filter housing doesn't kick the bucket soon haha, best of luck to you!

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I thought # 1 & #3 seemed high too and after comparing the prices of theses parts from ECS Tuning. Luckily they made a mistake and its just the oil housing gasket vs. the housing itself, so they reduced the price by $200 and will also give me a 15% discount on all of it.
I think I'll be more proactive after this and do the OFH gasket replacement my self next time like ever 50,000km. After reading the forum DiY, it doesn't seen too hard. |

The fan takes about 5 minutes to change. No joking, I did it to get room to access something else because it was just that easy. The piece itself is somewhat expensive, but the overall price is at least 2x what I'd expect.
The first item is "dealer priced", you can have that work done for 2/3 that, or less. It is also very DIY if you feel handy. The price for the new belt includes a new tensioner and pulleys ? If yes, very good price. If not, robbery. Takes 20 seconds to install the belt, the belt itself is 10 dollars. |

I recently broke my serpentine belt. But I also lost an oil pressure control valve and also the crank seal. still checking other damages. But the belt kit is cheap and you can get the Aux fan for about $400. Its an easy DIY if your up to it. But if your not under warranty, then make sense to find a good indie shop. Would be hard for them to mess up such an easy job. Or can they?
