***Question about impact of aftermarket wheels2011 328 xdrive sedan

Need to find out if the following setup on a 2011 328 xdrive sedan (no sport package) will damage the xdrive/transfer case:

Wheels:
19x8.5/19x10 Linea Corse Dyna

Tires:
235.35.19 Front
275.30.19 Rear (not lowered)

Any suggestions would be great. Tirediscounters indicated that by adding this staggered setup, I could really be putting too much stress on the transfer case and would ultimately cause damage.

Nope, you'll be fine the rolling diameter of the 235 and 275 is .08 %. Thats what I'm going for as well.
Also if you search the forum, there are a bunch of people running staggered setups on an xi.

Great thanks for your reply.

So the roll diameter is what I need to pay attention to?

As long as they equal then no additional stress would be put on the xdrive?

Thanks!

The rolling diameter will never be equal unless you have all the same size tire. You have to keep the rolling diameter under 1%.

Look, BMW produces an xi with 225 front and 255 rear setup straight from the factory look it up on their website.

So go back to that tire shop and slap that tire guy in the face.

335xi with Aftermarket Wheels

Hey guys, I am new to the site (sort of) as far as posting goes... I know this may be a dead thread, but I have some info that may help for future veiwers..

I have a 335xi sedan that came with the 225 front, 255 rear set-up and I decided I wanted aftermarket wheels. I went with BBS LM reps, 235, 8.5" front and 265, 9.5" rear (you should really go 275, but I was afraid of rub and clearance on the xi). I have had them on for about 3 to 4 months now and I noticed that the transmission was behaving differently as time went on, and I started hearing a brief grinding noise right after the car started. I have the 6MT in case it makes a difference. I was driving a few days ago and my dash lit up like the 4th of July... 4x4! light, ABS light, DTC light, Brake light (without hand brake engaged). It almost felt like the car was running normally, but started making a quiet grinding noise when I was going into first gear, and went away until it was shut down and started up again. I took it to two separate speed shops who ran the codes and looked at the car. Both told me it was for sure a shot transfer case... $3300 labor and parts from our friends at BMW. I guess the moral of the story is be careful... 2000 miles over warranty too!!! EEK

I prob shoulda mentioned that mine are 19"s too. The 18"s I took off the car were staggered as well which raises some confusion.. however the sizes are definitely different because I went from 225 to 235 in front and 255 to 265 in back.

I hope for the best for all of us

I find it very hard to believe that your staggered tire sizes are soley to blame for your transfer case...there are many members on here who have been running those sizes on their xi's for years without problems...something else is going on here

I appreciate the input because I am still fighting with the dealer like crazy to just get this taken care of... aftermarket wheels or not, I should not need to replace a transfer case at 52k. The wheels have only been on the car for about 10k miles.

I guess a better lesson to learn from this is that the dealer will make any excuse to not fix problematic issues, so be careful what aftermarket equip is on the car when you bring it in.
