High mileage 335i: Gf backed into it in driveway.. now what?
so basically i have a high mileage 2007 335i coupe (156k/auto). the car has been in my family since 2008 when we bought it with about 30,000 or so on it and then it was driven by my father who put about 115,000 highway miles on it. the vehicle is very well optioned out (Black exterior/sport seats in rare saddle brown, comfort access, nav, whatever the upgraded stereo is, etc) and has always been taken care of, we've done any maintenance that has come up and honestly have not run into too many problems.
To make a long story short we were just about finished cleaning up the car to take it over to get a quote as a trade in just to get an idea what i could get and my Girlfriend backed her JK wrangler into the front grill hood and bumper. i have two choices here. i can do some preventative maintenance and maybe get the turbos rebuilt.. i would just like to make the car as sound as possible so i dont have to worry about the turbos failing on me. And then the second option is to maybe try to get rid of the car now with the damage already on it and cut my losses. Im really just trying to see what you guys would do in my situation? \ Also heres some pics of the damage, her insurance will cover it if i chose to have it repaired bodywise. If its already been reported to her insurance company her rates will go up anyway. Have it repaired and hopefully they do a good job, then you can still trade it in.

Unless she has had a bunch of recent accidents, her insurance won't change much due to a single incident. A recent study by CR shows that insurance companies are more likely to jack your rate up due to poor credit than a single incident or ticket.
If she has insurance and has not had recent accidents, report this one and get it fixed by the insurance company. No one wants to buy a damaged 335i with 156K. You can't undo the 156K miles, but you can get it looking good.

As others have said, your girlfriends insurance rates will ultimately go up but not drastically. I would get it fixed and if you are really set on getting rid of the car trade it, otherwise I would keep driving it if you like it.

I'd get an estimate then cash from the insurance company. Find a junk yard hood, bumper and grills then swap it yourself. If lucky you may find them in black and not have to pay for paint. Could come out well ahead on the deal.

I would buy a backup camera and/or backup sensors for GF's Jeep. (I'm no expert, but I have been married for more than 30 years. )

Strangle her and leave her in a ditch? I dunno, call your insurance company and say someone backed into you in a shopping mall and left.

If you are handy changing the hood and bumper do it yourself and get it painted. Doesn't look like frame, headlights or radiator are damaged by your pics.
I smacked my daughter's TL into a pickup truck picking up tranny fluid for my 335. Clean junkyard hood and new headlight lens for the TL. Body shop pulled out the front crossmember and painted the hood for $400. Total I was out 600 +700 I paid the other guy for barely visible damage. My insurance co said my rates would go up about 1k per year, and I have a clean driving record. So no claim and no collision record on the car. |

from the pics doesnt look like there's any major damage and mainly superficial damage. Looks like you just need a new hood, grille and front bumper. You can probably source those on ebay for cheap especially since you drive a popular color.
I would take off the front bumper and make there's no damage under front bumper as well. If there's a mechanical damage and your not a diy, i would have insurance repair it. But if you go through insurance, it'll probably show up on a carfax and you'll get dinged in your trade in.. |

Nobody suggested that you beat her? Sheesh, girly men.
A few years ago my girl pulled out of the garage, into my old bimmer. While the damage was nowhere near what you've got, I had it cleaned up and sold it. No insurance claim. I still love her. And her dog. |

Looks like you're gonna need a full LCI conversion, sorry bro
Honestly though, just file the insurance claim to have them fix the body work. All said & done it'd be much cheaper than the $2K+ you'd lose if you sold it as-is Unless your gf is because she gets in a lot of accidents. If that's the case, be sure to dump her prior to filing the claim
