50-60K Service: Brake Flush + Oil Change + Transmission Fluid Replacement
I'm planning on taking my car to an independent BMW tech to get all this done. But to make things easier (for me and others who don't have much knowledge with this stuff), I'm trying to get a list going of all the supplies I need. If you can chime in your 2cents regarding this, that would be awesome. I thank you in advance for your assistance.
I'd also like to say, if you're getting OEM parts, get them from Evan and Jason at Tischer BMW. They're awesome. www.getbmwparts.com Oil Change -- OEM BMW HIGH PERFORMANCE 5w30 (Total: 7 Quarts) BMW PN: 07510017866 OEM BMW Oil Filters + Gaskets (available through Tischer BMW(FTW)) BMW PN: 11427566327 BMW OEM Transmission Oil (ZF Lifeguardfluid6) -- BMW OEM ATF - Shell M-1375.4 BMW PN: 83220142516 -- I ended up getting this. 7 quarts for drain/fill. Land Rover Dealer -- PN: LRN13754 (for Shell M-1375.4) (or Pentosin ATF-1) (or Redline D4 ATF) (Total needed: 7 Liters/quarts) Differential Gear Oil -- Land Rover Dealer - PN: LRN7581 (Castrol SAF-XO) (or Redline Gear Oil 75W-90) (or Royal Purple Gear Oil 75W-90 -- I got two bottles of this) (Total needed: 2 Quarts) Brake Fluid -- OEM BMW DOT 4 Brake Fluid (2 bottles) BMW PN: 81220142156 (or ATE Blue Brake Fluid) (or Pentosin DOT 4 LV Brake Fluid -- i got two bottles of this) Coolant Fluid -- BMW Antifreeze/Coolant Fluid BMW PN: 82141467704 (Total needed: 1 Gallon) Last edited by SE3P_to_E90; 02-18-2010 at 11:36 PM.. |

2 quarts brake fluid, I'd go with ATE blue if you have an amber in there now. What about the diff?
update: I'm now using Pentosin DOT 4 LV brake fluid Last edited by AlanAZ; 07-06-2011 at 07:51 AM.. |

Also, sorry if it's a dumb question, but do I have to change the transmission fluid and the differential fluid separately? |

The diff is separate and that I know: Redline 75W90 gearoil, takes a bit over a quart, but you do need a siphon tool to get the old oil out and the new in. There's a DIY in that section.
I don't have an AT, but if you search here or on the Redline website, you'll find it. Last edited by AlanAZ; 12-30-2009 at 10:03 AM.. |

BMW OEM ATF is Shell M-1375.4 (BMW# 83220142516) but is only available in bulk. Although your BMW service dept may put the fluid in container(s) you supply. The other alternative is to see whether your local Land Rover dealer carries the fluid in bulk or smaller containers. LRN13754 is their part # for Shell M-1375.4. And if you haven't picked up the diff gear oil then LRN7591 is Castrol SAF-XO (avail in quarts) which has BMW published approval.

Pentosin ATF-1 is equivalent to Shell M-1375.4
Redline 75W-90 may be used as an equivalent of Castrol SAF-XO |

as you are considering same ball park of what i'm looking at... here's what i got so far. ordered some and looking into some. i'm on the same boat as you are...
oil change - TOTAL QUARTS INEO MC3 5W30 5liters (x2) + oil filter (x10) from tischer brake fluids - bmw brake fluids you mentioned. 2 liters. transmission oil - pentosin ATF-1 OR Red Line D4 ATF which are equivalent to shell m-1375.s debating between 7 to 9 liaters and which one of two as i get various answers on how many liters i should order diff fluids - Max - Royal Purple Gear Gear Oil 75w90 2 quarts - some research shows me this performs bit better than RedLine i doubt if there's much but i'm spending extra $5 for peace of mind. coolant fluids - bmw coolant fluids. been told by several vendors that 1 gallon is suffice for drain and fill (ECS, Tishcer, etc). in addition to this, i'm also ordered spark plugs and its socket, windshield wiper and cabin filter... EDIT - stuff that i ordered are in bold. still trying to find which are better between RL and Pentosin on tranny oil but that should be the last one on the list since my steering fluids are already done

^ Hun77777, When should the steering fluid be changed? I didn't know that needed replacement but, again, I'm not very savvy when it comes to this.
Also, I have approx. 58K miles on my car, but the service lights on my dash say that I still have 40k miles or so left on the spark plugs... should I replace these as well? I drive the car often "spiritedly" I really appreciate all those who chimed in to share their experiences regarding this stuff. Without you fellow members, I would truly be lost and spanked w/ these maintenance bills. Finances are a little tight right now, but I don't mind doing all this maintenance if it means that my car will last past 100K miles. Nevertheless, I thank you guys again for your help and assistance. Last edited by SE3P_to_E90; 01-29-2010 at 03:04 PM.. |

Spark Plugs: per the BMW Service and Warranty booklet
– Spark Plug Service: 328i — Replace at 100,000 miles, or when specified by CBS. 335i — Replace at 45,000 miles, or when specified by CBS. With regard to the Power Steering fluid, this is another area where the BMW TIS states that fluid should be only added to top off the reservoir or when changing a steering component. I changed it when i did my other fluids at 100K. My dealer recommended 60K miles, but that is a dealer option - neither the CBS nor BMW states that mileage. Not to my knowledge anyway. I like your list at the top of this thread and since AT fluid seems to be the hot topic, you might want to add this link supplied by TurkeyBaster115: http://www01apps.zf.com/kst464/ZF_In...011_en0700.pdf It lists the OEM manufacturers fluid part number (Shell M1375.4) to use in the ZF 6AT. ZF provides Lifeguardfluid6 and can be found at most ZF distributors in USA. (Not all will sell to public)

anyways, steering fluids were fully drained and filled up by my local dealer because i had an issue with steering rack leakage. so when they change that they did that which was not that long ago so i know i'm good until 100k at least... as far as spark plugs go, i drive hard and got extensive list of mods so i tend to replace it every 20~30k miles. spark plugs is one of critical engine component that can be replaced and well maintained at fairly low cost and to me, it is no brainer to spend extra $100 or so to get my spark plugs replaced and keep in best shape for my driving habit... so yeah, my advise is go ahead and replace it. it's not expensive at all... p.s. i would add any LL-01 approved motor oil is good for oil change. also, there are a lot of choices on brake and differential fluids for our car other than what's mentioned above. redline brake fluid is also very popular for example... p.p.s. nice list above. i wish i had list like this when i start searching for it... i see lots of information quoted from my post above i feel the love~!

My point was if an owner is not doing his own work and paying for a plug change. The mechanic will charge the book rate to change the plugs regardless of how fast he (or you) can get to the plugs. Considering the shop rate is near $100/hr and the book time is probably 1.5 to 2 hours, it's a bit expensive to change the plugs every 20,000 miles v.s. 45,000 when the N54 calls for a plug change. If you DIY then that's a different cost model all together. |
