Where do you place the Jack Stands?

When the car is lifted on a jack point, where do you put the stands?

I had the same question, and I could find no good answer beyond "near the jack points." Don't put them on the axle.

You could jack from the front point and probably get them under the rear points. Dunno about getting all 4 corners up though. I havn't had a need to jack the car up yet (mumbles about stupid wheels not being here yet).

Well, we know the axle is no good. I'm curious because if I need to rotate the tires I'd like to have both wheels on one side off the ground. Last time I did it I used my floor jack and my neighbor's floor jack on the two jack points. Would be nice to use just one jack.

Maybe I'll ask the tech next time I'm at the dealer.

That's why I figured this is a worthy topic for discussion, and I do plan to ask the service techs what they think.

If you really find it that hard to find a place to jack up the car AFTER looking in the manual at that picture then I guess BMW did a smart move putting on runflats. You really have to be unable to operate a toaster oven also if you cant associate a picture with the real car.

Well, asswipe - if you read the thread throughly you will see that the question is where to place jack stands while the car is jacked AT THE JACKPOINTS.

Fair enough, I deserved that.

However, just put the stands between the jack and wheel well. Just because its not on a "hockey puck" doesnt mean its not safe. That whole rail is frame and solid enough to hold the car on stands.

In that case, I take back the harsh word. Hug? BTW - welcome. I'm not always this grumpy (just most of the time).

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I'd feel better if a tech said that was the spot. I kind of like the old days when you could see the frame!

The rear ones should be relatively easy. On my E46, I bought an aluminum jack from Costco for $100 and I can slide that in from behind, and jack either the differential or the diff subframe (depending on how lazy I am).

Jack it up high enough and you can slide jack stands on both rear jack points (left/right).

For the fronts... I'm afraid there's not going to be a good answer.

There was nothing sturdy enough for the E46 cars, I'd be surprised to find out they've added one for the E9x cars.

Some people have welded up square pads on a piece of transverse box-steel so they can lift the entire front - I believe the safe jacking points in that situation were 2 visible pieces of the front "frame", left and right of the transmission. (Again, on E46 cars).

Anyway, I'm curious too...

A Rotary SPA10 will cost you about $3,500 to $4,000 installed. You need a minmum 4 inch thick concrete floor and a 12 foot ceiling height. Make sure you get one built after January '05 because you'll need an arm mod kit ($2,200) to fit the E90 chassis.

I ran into this problem the other day when changing out my fog light bulbs... I just left the car up on the rolling jack (1 side at a time of course), put the stoppers on the rear wheels, and had a buddy watch the jack to make sure it didn't slide (which didn't).

I was worried where to put my jack stand because you can't actually feel the frame... oh someone please help hehe.

Snowman881, maybe you can use a 2x6 that sits under each jack point, with a block of wood in the center between them to spread the weight over three points on the rocker panel. Then put your jack in the center of the 2x6 under the block of wood and lift the whole side of the car up, then put your stands under the jack points (leaving the 2x6 in place).

I asked a tech about this issue and he told me that the rocker panel underneath the plastic can be used as a place for stands. The plastic will flex a bit, but won't harm the frame underneath.
